Louvroil

Louvroil is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais

The inhabitants are called Louvroiliens and Louvroiliennes.

Geography

Commune contiguous to Maubeuge with south-west, it was formerly, when Maubeuge was confined in its enclosure strengthened by Vauban, a rural district of the Avesnois. " Louvroil" would come from Loup, testifying that its village core was insulated in the scrap-metal avesnois.

It is the urban development of the two communes and that of Hautmont which joined together them in an agglomeration.

History

It is in 884 qu ' appears for the first time the name of Louvroil (Loveruva). From 1158 and during more than six centuries, the village was attached to the abbey of Hautmont; it is only in 1789, at the time of the Revolution, that the peasants of Louvroil claimed the abolition of the privileges and the end of the supervision hautmontoise.

At the 19th century, the industrial revolution transforms the agricultural small village into industrial small town: from 812 inhabitants in 1845, Louvroil passes to 2185 inhabitants in 1881. At the beginning of the 20th century, with the metallurgy, the drain of Sambre, the arrival of the railroad and the development of the iron and steel activities, the city knows an uninterrupted growth, passing successively to 4750 inhabitants in 1906 and 5251 in 1914.

During the First World War, Louvroil undergoes the German bombardments: the Michaux bridge and 150 houses are destroyed, the downtown area is touched hard. The finished war, the city takes again its growth to reach the 8000 inhabitants quickly.

The Second War involves the entry of the city during one time of resistance; the 27th company of Franc-tireurs and Partisans then prevents the Germans of destroyed the Michaux bridge, thus allowing the allied troops to sink on Mons.

The release marks the one period beginning of crucial and doubly beneficial rebuilding for the city. Industries turn to full output to ensure the production of materials and the population increases further.

However, the end of the Glorious Thirty is particularly difficult for the area, and the Seventies and Eighties see painful industrial reorganizations and an explosion of unemployment. The catastrophic situation of the time since improved, but the city always has one of the highest unemployment rates of the area, however already underprivileged.
