Louts

The Louts (or Lous ) is a left Affluent of the Adour, between the Gabas and the Luy, in the French Département of the Landes.

Etymology

The name of Louts is mentioned in the form: Flumen which dicitur Lossium (Gallia Christiana, 12th century). It comes from the Basque Lohizun which means “muddy”.

The Luz, the Luzoué and the Luzoû have a related name. The name of the Loucin, affluent of the Luy de Béarn, in is a Hypocoristique.

Geography

Louts takes its source with height of Thèze in the Yrénées-Atlantiques. It crosses the Chalosse and is thrown in Adour with Goos, in the east of Dax.
