Toponymy

The toponym Lourdios appears in the form Ordios (1695, enumeration of Winder).

Michel Grosclaude proposes two assumptions, both with a Basque/aquitanic origin:

  • radical urd, projecting ledge, plate with the Aquitanian suffix ossum
  • radical ardi, stone heap, with the same suffix.

History

The common one was created in 1820 by the meeting of the district of Lourdios located on the commune of OSI-in-Winder and of the district of Ichère which depended on Sarrance.

Economy

The economy of the commune is primarily directed towards agriculture and the breeding (bovines and sheep). The manufacture of farm cheeses (AOC Ossau-Iraty) is also one of the resources of the commune.
