History
The village of Loupian is on the layout of the Via Domitia. The Archéologie revealed the presence of a very important Gallo-Roman villa dedicated to the production of wine and its export. For that the villa had a workshop of productions of Amphore S (estampillées MR. HAS F) and of a port on banks of the pond of Thau. This field became with the Ve century a sumptuous field on the covered ground of mosaics. To a few hundred meters of the villa and close to the current church Holy-Cecile, one found the remainders of a large church paléochétienne (20 m X 30 m), with a hexagonal baptismal tank and accompanying documents. Later a necropolis is created on the grounds of this church.
With the Middle Ages, the village settles to a few hundred meters of the church paléochétienne; it was surrounded by a wall, including the castle of Loupian (today town hall of the commune) and its vault castrale (Saint-Hippolyte) of Romance style. The bedside of the vault is remarkable: with polygonal form, it is covered by a vault in bottom of furnace, carried out using small rectangular blocks. Under the vault, four toric arcs cross two to two, like drawing diagrammatic intersecting ribs.
In XIVe century was built (or rebuilt) the church Holy-Cecile of southernmost Gothic style, with a single nave, with the walls reinforced by buttresses.
The commune was on the territory of the old diocese of Agde.
