Louisville is the city of the the United States of America, largest of the State of the Kentucky with 699  827 inhabitants in 2005 (1 342.918 with the suburbs).

Founded in 1778 per John Rogers Clark and baptized in the honor of Louis XVI, his emblem represents a Fleur of lily, in homage to the French, in particular Fayette, Charles de Vergennes or Beaumarchais, which brought their assistance during the war of independence. The name of the city decides officially as in French.

Louisville is located at the limit of Kentucky and the Indiana, near the falls of the Ohio. It is known like " carry towards the sud" but it is especially known for its horse-races, of which the famous Kentucky Derby . History

Geography

Louisville is located at 38°13 ′ 44 ″ NR, 85°44 ′ 58 ″ W. According to the Bureau of the census of the United States, the urban surface of Louisville extends on 1.032 km ², and is more populated 43ème country. It includes/understands the county of Jefferson, twelve other counties of Kentucky and four others of the Indiana of the South.

Government

Since 2003, Louisville and the county of Jefferson amalgamated, giving rise to an agglomeration (Louisville Metro) of 700  030 inhabitants (2004). Louisville is directed by the Democrat Jerry Abramson, called " the mayor with vie". Indeed, it already carried out three consecutive mandates (1985 - 1998) before being elected mayor of the agglomeration this time, in 2003. It seems to have good lucks again carry it with the next elections of 2007. The municipal council is composed of 26 members (one by district, renewable by half every two years).

Culture

The Speed Art Museum, open in 1927, is oldest and largest of the museums of art of Kentucky. Located near the University of Louisville, it gathers 1.200 works in its permanent exposure.

Education

The public school system, the Jefferson County Public Schools , gathers more than 98.000 students in 87 elementary schools, 23 colleges, 20 colleges and 23 other centers school. Louisville has also many private schools, including 27 Protestant Catholic schools and several schools. These last form school system protesting the most important of the country in term of many pupils.

The principal universities of the city are the Université of Louisville, the Bellarmine University , the Spalding University , the Sullivan University and the Jefferson Community and Technical College (belonging to the Kentucky Community and Technical College System ), as well as the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary , the Simmons College off Kentucky , and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary . The Indiana University Southeast is located on the other side of Ohio at New Albany, Indiana.

Transport

The principal airport of the city and the area is the International airport of Louisville, which accommodates 3,5 million passengers and more than 1.400.000 tons of goods per annum. The Bowman Field Airport , smaller, is used for the General aviation.

Public transport has a service of bus being used totality of the center and the county as Jefferson, as well as the suburbs of the county of Oldham, the county of Bullitt in Kentucky, and of the cities located in the vicinity in the Indiana.

The plan of the streets of Louisville is similar to that of the other American cities. The principal highways are the Interstate I-64, I-65 and I-71. Louisville was a great center of the rail traffic in the history. Today the city is been useful by two principal railroads; CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern . Five principal lines connect the city to the remainder of the area, like two regional lines.
