Louis of Orleans-Bragance
Louis Marie Philippe Pierre d' Alcantara Gaston Michel Raphaël Gonzague of Orleans-Bragance , Prince of the Grão-Para , was born on January 26th 1878 in Petropolis, in Brazil, and is deceased on March 26th 1920), in Cannes, in France. It is a prince and a Brazilian writer of French language. It is in addition at the origin of the Branche of Vassouras of the House of Orleans-Bragance.
Family
Louis of Orleans-Bragance is the second wire of Isabelle de Bragance (1846-1921), imperial princess of Brazil and several times Régente of his country, and her husband the prince Gaston of Orleans (1842-1922), count of Have.
November 4th, 1908, prince Louis links himself with Maria-Pia of Bourbon-Siciles (1878-1973), princess of Deux-Siciles, itself girl of Alphonse of Bourbon-Siciles (1841-1934), count de Caserte, and of his wife Maria-Antonieta of Bourbon-Siciles (1851-1938).
From this union are born 3 children:
- Pierre Henri of Orleans-Bragance (1909-1981), imperial prince of Brazil, which marries the princess Marie Isabelle de Wittelsbach (1914), princess of Bavaria, with which it has twelve children.
- Luiz of Orleans-Bragance (1911-1931), prince of Brazil, deceased without alliance nor descent and buried with the Royal Vault of Dreux.
- Pia Maria of Orleans-Bragance (1913-2000), princess of Brazil, which marries the count Rene de Nicolay, of which it has two wire.
Biography
Raised to Brazil during the reign of his grandfather, the emperor Pierre II of Brazil, prince Louis of Orleans-Bragance leaves in exile with his family when the Republic is proclaimed, in 1889. The prince, who is not whereas third in the line of succession to the throne (just after his/her mother and its older brother), thus makes his studies in France and it is also in this country that it Marie, in 1908.
The same year, dom Louis of Orleans-Bragance becomes prince of the Grão-Para - and thus heir apparent to the Brazilian crown when his/her older brother, Pierre d' Alcantara of Orleans-Bragance (1875-1940) contracts a marriage morganatic with the Czech countess Elizabeth Dobrzensky de Dobrzenicz (1875-1951).
At the beginning of the 20th century, the prince ties bonds with the chiefs of the movement Brazilian monarchist and tries a return in his native land, in spite of the Loi of exile which prohibits to him to go there. May 12th, 1906, the prince thus arrives in the port of Rio de Janeiro, on board the the Amazon . But its unloading is prohibited by the republican authorities which refuse to recognize its request for habeas corpus . Depity, Dom Louis of Orleans-Bragance thus turns over to Europe by the same boat: it will re-examine Brazil never again.
During the First World War, the prince is authorized by the king George V of England to commit himself in the British army fighting at the sides of the Allies. But it is wounded during the conflict and keeps deep after-effects, which will cause its death two years only after the end of the hostilities.
Ironically, the exile of the imperial family of Brazil ends in 1920, year when the prince of the Grão-Para dies.
