Biography
An exiled family
Born with Courbevoie the July 31st 1914, Louis de Funès (1914 - 1983) is the third child of an arrived couple of Spain in France in 1904 after his/her father, Carlos Luis of Funès de Galarza (1871 - 1934), had removed his mother Léonor Soto Reguera (1879 - 1957) because the family of this one opposed their union.His/her father, who cannot follow any more his occupation of lawyer since his installation in France, improvises himself negotiating in Perle S and jewels. This father, character a little odd that he knew little, seems to have had less influence on him than his mother. Thus, Louis de Funès told that it was its first professor of comedy: It arrived at my mother of me courser around the table by shouting " Yé go t-piece toué" , in its way of being and of acting, it had, without the knowledge, the genius of the boards. . It also gives him its first lessons of Piano at the 5 years age.
At 16 years, after average secondary studies et on the councils of its brother become furrier, Louis de Funès between at the Vocational school of the Fur but it is put at the door for chahutage. He works then in several furriers, applies various trades, but because of its systematic references and by lassitude of its professional escapades, his/her parents register it in 1932 at the Technical training school of Photography and Cinema (ETPC), today 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure Louis Lumière . In the courses, it has in particular as a school-fellow Henri Decaë who was a long time later director of the photography on several of his films. Finally it is returned for arson.
Then start again the cycle of employment and layoffs (draftsman for the car manufacturer Rosengart, countable assistance, window dresser, etc) from where it always ends up being made return. In 1936, it marries his first wife, Germaine Louise Élodie Carroyer. A child is born from this union, but the couple separates very quickly even if the divorce is marked only in 1942. Soon it starts to be made engage as pianist of bar. He plays in a great number of establishments, connecting some twelve hours evenings (of 17:30 to 5:30 of the morning), paid with the cup (the tip of the customers) or concerning a seal of misery. It with the musical ear - that of which he will serve in some of his films such as the Nitwit , the Great restaurant or the Man orchestrates - and a good knowledge of the cinema of its time.
Beginnings of the actor
In 1942, at the 28 years age, it decides to become actor and is registered with the Cours Simon, making a success of his entrance examination thanks to an interpretation of a scene of the Fourberies of Scapin of Molière. Even if it made there only one short passage, it crosses in the course of many actors as Daniel Gélin which enables him to begin later in the part the Lover from Straw from Marc-Gilbert Sauvajon: An extraordinary chance. I got out of a coach of first in the subway and Daniel Gélin, already crossed with the Rene-Simon course, got into a coach of second. The door was going to be closed again when he shouts me , . Beside some small theatrical figurations, the actor demene to earn his living thanks to its activities of pianist, giving sometimes courses the day then playing during the night through the night Paris, as in 1950 where it is then pianist-actor in the troop Burlesques of Paris (to which Bourvil belongbelonged a few months earlier, at the time of a round in Quebec) of max Révol. Louis being remarié in 1943 with Jeanne Augustine Barthélemy, it has in 1944 a second wire, Patrick, and in 1949 a third wire, Olivier, which will hold some roles at the side of his/her father to the cinema as with the theater.
In 1945, always thanks to Daniel Gélin, it begins with the cinema in Temptation from Barbizon from Jean Stelli. Louis de Funès in the tiny role of the gatekeeper of the cabaret “the Paradise” pronounces his first counterpart with the screen by seeing a customer (Pierre Larquey) trying to pass through the closed door: Ben, it has his account that one, today! . This role is the departure of one race to the participation in film productions, the actor connecting silhouettes, figurations and small roles. Sometimes, it incarnates even several characters in the same film as for Of Guesclin of Bernard de Latour in 1948 where he is in turn beggar, gang leader, astrologer, lord, etc
An irresistible rise towards the head of poster
With the beginning of the year 1950, Sacha Guitry entrusts several small roles to him, in particular in the Poison (1951), I was to it three times (1952), If Paris to us were told (1955) and especially Life of an honest man (1953) where it has a role a little more consistent. In this film, its character refines himself a little more - he appears “with the naturalness”, without grimace nor moustache - and it is associated for the first time with Claude Gensac. In 1952, it joined the troop of the Branquignols directed by Robert Dhéry. It begins initially in the review Bouboute and Sélection , then in Ah! Beautiful the bacchantes in 1953. This review obtains a great success - two years of representations - and contributes to make known it. Moreover, integrated in a troop dedicated to comic, the actor will improve his technique and will explore facets of his talent up to that point forsaken. It is found the following year in the adaptation to the screen of the spectacle, Ah! Beautiful the bacchantes of Jean Loubignac, which is its first color film. This same year, he plays vis-a-vis Fernandel in the World's wonder of Henri Verneuil and for the first time vis-a-vis Bourvil in Poisson of April of Gilles Grangier. Jean-Paul Chanois, after him to have entrusted two small roles in Without leaving of address (1951) and Marriage bureau (1952), offers to him the supporting role of Mr. Calomel in the popular comedy with success Papa, mom, the good one and me (1954) and its continuation Papa, mom, my wife and me (1956).
In 1956, it obtains a beginning of recognition with the cinema in the Crossing of Paris of Claude Autant-Lara, where it plays the Jambier grocer. It is essential with force vis-a-vis Jean Gabin and Bourvil in a service of a few minutes during which it draws to some extent his future character: coward in front of “the fort” (Jean Gabin) and coleric in front of “the weak one” (Bourvil). As of the following year, Maurice Regamey offers to him its first main role in Like a hair on soup . Its interpretation of a suicidal type-setter is worth with the actor the Grand Prix of the Laughter 1957, its first reward and the film, small production without claim, which should have passed unperceived, runs of very long weeks. . Always in 1957, it is the head of poster of Nor seen… Nor known… of Yves Robert in the role of the poacher Badger. Accompanied by its dog “Insane the camp”, this rural misadventure of Puppet brave man all the forms of authority and always ends up escaping the gamekeeper. The film is a nice success at its exit and is worth with the actor some articles laudators in the press following the example weekly magazine France Dimanche which in its number of September 20th, 1957 titrates with the one: Louis de Funès, the funniest actor of France . One still finds it in a main role in 1958 in Taxi, Roulotte and Bullfight of André Hunebelle, turned in Spain, which is a certain success. However the progression of its career to the cinema marks a pause and the actor will turn over to less important films or roles for some time.
Two decisive roles
It is initially with the theater that the career of Louis de Funès will know a new acceleration. Since his beginnings, the actor never moved away from the boards and it begins again in particular, in 1957, at the sides of Danielle Darrieux and Robert Lamoureux, the role created by Raimu in Faisons a dream Sacha Guitry. The biographer of the author, Jacques Lorcey, note: It will be the last great joy of our Sacha. This success, obtained by high-speed motorboats so different from the creators brings the certainty to him which its theater will survive to him. . In September 1959 for the rounds Karsenty, it begins the repetitions from Oscar , a part of Claude Magnier created with Paris in 1958 with a distribution which included/understood Pierre Mondy and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Starting from October 1st, the hundred days of a round start which will lead it in the French provinces and the Maghreb. Success is such as one proposes to him to take again the part in Paris in January 1961. Initially hesitant for this Parisian recovery , it accepts. Finally the part is an enormous success and on scene it multiplies the physical improvisations and prowesses. Pierre Mondy, the creator of the role taken again by Funès, notes: Louis was straightforwardly brilliant in Oscar . Brilliant of invention, burlesque. He had improved the role . The actor will take again “this fetish role” in the film adaptation of the part realized by Edouard Molinaro in 1967, then again on scene at the beginning of the the Seventies in a setting in scene of Pierre Mondy.
In parallel, it continues to turn. One Crime doesn't pay finds it for example in 1961 in a small role of a barman in , the third film carried out by Gerard Oury. During turning, whereas it holds the only comic role of film, Louis de Funès tries to convince the realizer whom it is made to turn of comic films: As for you, you are a comic author, and you will manage to express you really only when you admit this truth there . Jean Gabin in the Gentleman of Epsom of Gilles Grangier. --> In 1963, it finds the head of poster with Pouic-Pouic , the adaptation by Jean Girault of the light comedy Without ceremony which it had written with Jacques Vilfrid. Louis de Funès had taken part in the creation of the part in 1952 - it held the role of the Master of hotel incarnated by Christian Marin in film - but the part had not been success. Finally, in spite of this failure and the difficulties encountered by the realizer near the producers to assemble the project around Louis de Funès, this film makes it possible the actor to find many people and marks the departure of the second started from its career which will not see any more its popularity bending.
In Oscar as in Pouic-Pouic , Louis de Funès incarnates an easy and irascible man, having difficulties with his offspring: he declines sound character fetish inspired by the Pants commedia LED' arte . It now created its comic character: coleric, authoritative, grimaçant, all in energy and gummed certain excesses which parasitized it in the Fifties .
A series of popular films
Pouic-Pouic mark also the beginning of collaboration between Jean Girault and Louis de Funès who produced thirteen films. After Make jump the bank , in 1964, they turn together, in spite of the reserves of the producers who prefer Darry Cowl or Francis Blanche, the first shutter of the series of the Gendarmes, the Gendarme of Saint-Tropez , who meets a considerable success and installs the actor in top of the Box-office for the first time. Hardly two months later, he triumphs again in the role over a representative over the order in Fantômas . In this film built on the double composition of Jean Marsh (Fantômas/Fandor), it transcends its role of comic counterpoint and manages to eclipse its partners. While popular successes accumulate, at the end of 1964, it turns the Nitwit , of Gerard Oury, where it divides the poster with Bourvil. The exit of the film in March 1965 is new a triompheduet with Bourvil with that formed by Laurel and Hardy -->. In 1967, the Great Ramble , again with Bourvil and carried out by Gerard Oury, is a colossal success: the film indeed held a long time the record of the greatest number of places of cinema sold in France (17 million). It was détrôné only in 1998, by the film Titanic of James Cameron but it remains the French film having obtained the greatest number of entries in room. the Delusions of grandeur of Gerard Oury must mark the meeting again of Louis de Funès and of Bourvil but the death of this last failed to stop the project. Simone Signoret then suggests the name of Montand in Oury which perceives the potential of the duet after some adaptations: I had conceived for Bourvil a role of servant of comedy Sganarelle kind. Montand will be closer to Scapin .
Return to the theater
At the end of November 1971, with the Theater of the Palais Royal, it takes again Oscar , which it plays almost each evening until September 1972 with an interruption during the summer. As from March 1973, it is invested enormously in the turning of the Aventures of Rabbi Jacob who leaves the October 18th the same year. The following day, Louis de Funès is again on the boards with the Comédie of the Fields-Élysées, for what was its last appearance with the theater. Until the April 25th 1974, it plays almost 200 times the part of Jean Anouilh, the Waltz of the toreadors . From there, it rests with the castle of Clermont, located at the Cellier in Loire-Atlantique; he gardens much and refuses to undertake anything in preparation for the very physical turning of next film of Gerard Oury. In the Crocodile , of which the first turn of crank is scheduled for May 1975, it must play the part of a South American dictator, a small covetous colonel, nasty piece of work, couard with weaknesses: the money, its wife, her son .
A precarious health
In March 1975, whereas the préproduction of the Crocodile is very advanced, it is victim of two consecutive infarctions which miss carrying it. It must slow down its rate/rhythm of work and gives up definitively its theatrical career, incompatible with its state. Its career with the cinema is also obérée because in addition to its reduced physical condition, the risks of relapse make that the insurers do not want to take the risk any more to cover it for a film. Determined, the producer Christian Fechner finally succeeds in obtaining an agreement for a two weeks insurance and takes the risk to produce the Wing or the thigh with only one assured small portion of turning. When the film leaves the October 27th 1976, the French public finds the actor thinned down with the screen and plebiscite its return - almost six million entries - to the side of Coluche.
Louis de Funès thus reappears with the screen, but its doctor is always on the plate, as well as an ambulance. He continues to turn but at intervals much less constant than at his beginnings, like the Discord with Annie Girardot in 1978 or the extraterrestrial Gendarme and the in 1979, and especially, he apprehends his comic in a new manner, because he recognizes: I cannot make brutality any more. This brutality, this anger is a product which I had manufactured for a role and all the directors asked me for this product From now on, this comic does not interest me any more
In 1980, it carries out an old dream: to adapt to the cinema a part of Molière and to carry out a version with its image of it. Thus Miserly the arrives on the cinema displays, but meets only one modest success (in 1964 already, it had recorded on a disc 33T 6 texts of parts of Molière - of which extracts of Miserly, and 10 fables of the Fountain). This same year 1980, it however receives a César of honor for the whole of its career, of the hands of Jerry Lewis.
Later, one of its sons advises to him to read a novel of Rene Fallet entitled the Soup with the cabbages , which, according to him, has the potential to be able “to make a good film”. A adaptation to the cinema is turned in company of Jean Carmet and Jacques Villeret. the Gendarme and the gendarmettes is its last film. The January 27th 1983, it is victim of a new infarction, which is fatal for him. It is buried with the cemetery of the Cellier on January 29th, 1983.
Springs of the humor of Louis de Funès
The capacities of Louis de Funès with MIME R and to make grimaces are the principal aspects of its humor. The MIME is for him essential to punctuate its words: “When one describes the shape of bottle with his two hands, explained it by uniting to it epic with the word, the bottle is there, one sees it. It floats one moment in space, even when the gesture is finished. ”. He exploits also much the repetition in a scene of his gestures or words. Moreover the spring of its humor is also collected in the excessive character of the feelings and emotions which it expresses, which it is the fear or the despair - pretends or real - of its character.
He excels in particular in the expression of anger: growls, noises of the mouth, repetitive slaps on the other characters, great gestures, etc Its roles lent themselves readily to this play: its characters are often hypocritical, antipathetic, without being, most of the time, malicious or incompetents of redemption. Louis de Funès said that nothing made it any more laugh, in the everyday life, that a person while engueulant another, without the latter being able to retort… One watched for thus in his films the moment when it was going to be put in anger against someone else.
Its small size (1,64 m) Second world war, (it was reformed for other thing)--> contrasted with that of its larger partners (Bourvil, Yves Montand) and added another comic element to the character.
Disguises in series
Even if it did not often on the occasion to resort to it in the many films in which it took part, Louis de Funès carried readily disguises to accentuate, sometimes until excess, the comic situations in which it made evolve/move his characters. For example, he disguises oneself as a false poet manner and carrying a wig in the Great restaurant to come incognito to test the restaurant of which he is the director (it orders water glass and a radish). In the same context, he disguises out of old woman with veil in the Wing or the thigh to supervise how the direction of a great restaurant in the course of test, prevented “anonymously” by its secretary, is put into four to exaggerate the attentions with regard to one of the agents of its gastronomical guide. In the Delusions of grandeur where it raises a costume of the beginning of the 17th century, it also appear of “Rams in black” in a tavern. In Short head , he is even a specialist in the kind… endorsing then up to five different disguises!
Its costume hassidic in the Adventures of Rabbi Jacob remained famous. One can also raise the costumes of the Beautiful Time whose actor avoids himself in Hibernatus , like his behavior of ambulance man and her dress of monk. In Miserly the , it carries a costume of peacock which can accentuate even more the comedy situation. Let us add the uniform of gendarme in the Gendarme of Saint-Tropez and his continuations, where it also appears as a nun, as well as the port of a wig of leader then the disguise as an officer of Wehrmacht then in Feldgendarme with the too large helmet in the Great Ramble .
Famous duets
The talent of Louis de Funès functioned well within the framework of regular or occasional duets with very diverse actors. Claude Gensac, known for the nickname that Cruchot gives him in the series of the Gendarmes : “My hind”, was the female accomplice of the characters of Louis de Funès; she often played his wife with the screen. Louis de Funès played also much with Michel Galabru, his superior in the series of the Gendarmes and is used to him as burlesque development. Several scenes of the Delusions of grandeur remained famous, like the alarm clock with the rhymes in “Or” or the cleaning of the ears, and immediately make think of Yves Montand. Louis de Funès also played of famous scenes with Coluche in the Wing or the thigh . But its most outstanding duet is that trained with Bourvil in the Nitwit and especially in the Great Ramble .
He also played with his son, Olivier de Funès, in Summer holidays , the Man orchestrates , the Great restaurant , On a tree perched , Fantômas breaks out and Hibernatus . Other actors played several times with him, like Bernard Blier ( Hussards, OJ and the Great restaurant ), Jean Gabin ( Tattooed the , the Crossing of Paris and the Gentleman of Epsom ), Jean Marais ( the Captain Crashes to pieces , Fantômas , Fantômas breaks out and Fantômas against Scotland Yard ), Maurice Risch ( Summer holidays , Discord and certain episodes of the Gendarme of Saint-Tropez ), Michel Simon ( Life of an honest man )… He was also at the sides of Fernandel in the World's wonder, Mam' zeal Nitouche and Boniface sleepwalker with the cinema (they nothing but did cross in the Life with two, and 2 sketches different from the Diable and the Ten Commands), and on disc in a serious customer of Georges Courteline in 1954.

An innate direction of the dance and music
According to Colette Brosset, Louis de Funès had the music and the dance in the skin. Its capacity to assimilate and serve a choreography was astonishing. Its arabesques make wonder in films like Ah! Beautiful the bacchantes , the Great restaurant , the Man orchestrates or the Adventures of Rabbi Jacob . One can also see it and to hear it play of the piano in for example I like to only you Pierre Montazel, or Ah! Beautiful the bacchantes of Jean Loubignac (with Francis Blanche with the song, in To sing under the sun , of famous the Bouvart and Ratinet (of not less famous the tables of logarithms !)).
