Louis Joseph Vicat , born the March 31st 1786 with Nevers, dead the April 10th 1861 with Grenoble, French, inventive engineer of the artificial cement.
Between with the Polytechnic school in 1804, then with the School of the Highways Departments in 1806.
He studies the mechanism of catch of natural limes and discovers their principles of hydraulicity on the building site of the bridge of Souillac. That allows the manufacture of artificial hydraulic lime and the natural cement as from 1817. He discovers the clinker, component of slow cement, and allows the artificial manufacture of the Portland cement (" white gold ") as from 1840.
He also invents the Aiguille Vicat which makes it possible to determine the time of catch.
Vicat did not take any patent, published a list of the careers to exploit cements, refused an armchair with the Academy of Science of Paris in order to continue his research; what was worth an international recognition to him.
Cité by Honore de Balzac the priest of village in 1839: " Which will be the reward of Vicat, that among us who made make only real progress with the practical science of constructions? ".
Louis Vicat had a son, Joseph Vicat, who was his assistant during 20 years then who melted the Société Vicat in 1853.
Research on the various properties that the stones with cements and hydraulic limes can acquire by the effect of a complête cooking preceded by observations on abnormal limes which form the passage of eminently hydraulic lime to cements , 1840
Treated practical and theoretical of the composition of the mortars, cements and gangues with pozzolanas and of their employment in all kinds of work followed by the means of appreciating of it the duration in constructions with the sea , 1856
