Louis Pierre Alexis Pothuau
Louis Pierre Alexis Pothuau is an admiral and French politician, born and died in Paris (1815 - 1882).
Biography
Exit of a family originating in the Martinique, it left the Naval college in 1832. It took share under the command of the Prince de Joinville with the bombardment of Mogador (1844) then, during the Crimean War, with the bombardment of Odessa and the seat of Sébastopol.Rear-admiral (1864), it accepted in 1870, during the head office of Paris, the command of the forts of the South, then of one division to the head of which it was distinguished at the time of the attack of Station-with-Oxen close to Choisy-the-King.
Promoted vice-admiral, he was elected appointed of Paris to the National Assembly and entered the first government consisted Thiers as Minister for the marine and the colonies (February 19th 1871 - May 25th 1873).
Named irremovable Senator (1875), it lined up side of the opposition at the time of the Crise of May 16th, 1877 at the conclusion which it found the ministry for the navy in the government Dufaure (December 13rd 1877 - February 4th 1879.
It occupied finally the post of ambassador with London (1879 - 1881).
