Louis Nicolas de Clerville
Louis Nicolas de Clerville , known as generally the knight of Clerville (born in 1610 and died in 1677), is a Engineer French fortifications.
Biography
Knight of Malta, it begins its military career on the galère S in the Mediterranean. It takes part then in the Guerre Thirty Year old to the Régiment of Noailles, and becomes military engineer in 1643.
Envoy rising of the charts in Auvergne, it takes the party of the king during the Fronde. He directs there many seat S, in particular in the East of France. In 1653, it orders the seat of Holy-Menehould with Vauban, young person Cadet, under his orders.
In 1659, the creation of the load of general Police chief of the fortifications is decided in its favor for him by Mazarin, after the catch of Dunkirk, and it obtains it in 1662.
In 1660, it is in charge of the construction of the strong Saint Nicolas's Day, with Marseilles, work completed in 1664.
In 1663-1666, he is member of the charged commission to evaluate the project of Canal of the South, and makes the estimates of them. It chooses the site of the port of This.
In 1667, its project of Citadelle for Lille is forsaken for that of Vauban, which becomes thus the preferred engineer of the mode and the évince gradually. In 1670, Colbert requires Cartographie R of him the Western coasts of France. Clerville withdraws in Oléron in 1671.
