Louis Michel van Loo

Louis-Michel van Loo is a French painter born with Toulon the March 2nd 1707 and died in Paris the March 20th 1771.

Biography

Resulting from the dynasty of the Van Loo, established in France in the 17th century, Louis Michel van Loo studied under the direction of his/her father, the painter Jean-Baptiste van Loo, with Turin and Rome. It gained the price of the Royal Académie of Painting and Sculpture in 1725. It remained with Rome of 1727 with 1732 with his uncle, the painter Charles André van Loo (1705 - 1765).

In 1736, he became official painter of the court of Philippe V of Spain to Madrid. It was among the founding members of the Academy of Madrid in 1752.

It returned to France in 1753 and painted several portraits of Louis XV.

In 1765, it succeeded his/her uncle Charles-Andre as royal principal of the protected pupils.

He is the brother of the painters François van Loo and Charles Amédée Philippe van Loo.
