Louis Leprince-Ringuet
Louis Leprince-Ringuet , born the March 26th 1901 with Ales and deceased the December 23rd 2000 with Paris, is a Physicien, engineer in telecommunications, historian of sciences and essay writer French.
Biography
Louis Leprince-Ringuet, wire of Felix Leprince-Ringuet, director of the École des Mines, and grandson of Rene Stourm, of the Institute, was raises with the Polytechnic school (Promotion X1920N) then with Supélec of 1920 to 1923 before becoming engineer with the Service of the underwater cables. In 1929, he works with the physicist Maurice de Broglie at the physics laboratory of x-rays. It is thanks to the latter, that he will describe later as “spiritual father”, that he starts to work on what will become its speciality, the nuclear physics.
He teaches physics at the Polytechnic school of 1936 to 1969 (succeeding Charles Fabry) and with the Collège de France of 1959 to 1972. As from 1949, he is member of the Academy of Science. He obtains many titles of recognition by his pars such as several prices of the Academy of Science and the French company of physics (Price Felix Robin 1942). He is defined itself as experimentative physicist and attaches a great importance to the experimentation. In 1958, it obtains to the nomination of one 3rd professor of physics in Polytechnique (Bernard Gregory).
Author of several books and prize winner of the literary prize Eve Delacroix in 1958, it is elected member of the French Academy in 1966.
Its engagement in favor of Europe leads it to be a president of the French Organization of the European Movement of 1974 to 1990.
One can also quote his passions for two other fields where its talent was recognized: painting and tennis.
Catholic practitioner, it thought much of the relations between science and the religion. Since 1949, he is president of the catholic Union of the French scientists. In 1961, it enters to the Pontifical Académie of Sciences.
It received great civil distinctions such as Grand officer of the Légion of honor, Grand-Croix of the National order of the Merit, Commandeur of the academic Palms.
It is deceased on December 23rd, 2000 in Paris at the 99 years age.
