Louis Jean Pierre Old-fashioned
Louis Jean Pierre Old-fashioned , born the May 10th 1748 with Yvetot and died in 1831 with Rouen, is a Ornithologue French.
His family having interests in the island of Santo Domingo, Louis Vieillot passes there most of his youth.
Banished France during the Revolution, it takes refuge with the the United States where it studies avian fauna. It is of this stay that the work is drawn, incomplete, the Birds of septentrional America (1808).
Of return in France in 1800 (or 1801), it occupies a modest employment with the Bulletin of the Laws . In the years which follow, Vieillot made appear a Histoire of the gilded birds or with metal reflections (1802) and a Natural history of the most beautiful songbirds of the torrid zone (1805).
In 1802, in collaboration with Jean Baptiste Audebert it also publishes a Natural history and general hummingbirds, hummingbirds, jacamars and promerops followed by a Natural history and general of the creepers and birds of paradise .
The Analyze of a new elementary ornithology appears in 1816 when Vieillot tries to precede certain work of Georges Cuvier. It takes an active part in the Nouveau dictionary of natural history (1803-1819).
Old-fashioned is one of the first ornithologists studied the modifications of the plumage. It drew its observations from dead birds but also from observation on the ground.
It described a great number of new species, in particular coming from the the Antilles and of the North America.
It cannot complete its French Ornithologie, or Natural history, general and particular of the birds of France whose publication starts in 1823 and stops by the death of its author.
He dies forgotten and in greatest misery in 1831 in Rouen.
