Louis Jean François Lagrenée , known sous le nom de' Lagrenée elder the is a French painter of the 18th century born with Paris the December 30th 1724 and died in Paris the June 19th 1805.

Raise Carle Vanloo, it is allowed in March 1744 at the school of the protected pupils and envoy with Rome. It is approved in 1753.

It is received member of the royal Académie on May 31st 1755 with the Removal of Déjanire (Musée of Louvre). It becomes successively, assistant-professor, professor, director of the Académie from France to Rome, vice-chancellor, conservative and honorary administrator of the Museum.

In 1804, Napoleon gave him the Légion of honor. His/her young Jean-Jacques brother, known as Lagrenée the Young person, was his pupil. He died in Louvre.
