Louis Jacques Thénard

The baron Louis Jacques Thénard , born with Louptière the May 4th 1777 and died in Paris the June 21st 1857, is a Chimiste French.

Biography

Collaborator of Louis Joseph Gay-Lussac (1778-1850), it discovers the Hydrogen peroxide in 1818, as well as the Bore, and establishes a classification of the metals. In 1799, it discovers the Bleu of Thénard (the Bleu of cobalt), which is used to color the Porcelaine. In 1804 it succeeds Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin with the pulpit of chemistry to the Collège de France. In 1811, it insulates the Silicium.

It is titular pulpit of chemistry of the Faculty of Science of Paris of 1809 with 1841, date on which Antoine-Jerome Balard succeeds to him, and of the Polytechnic school, succeeding Antoine-François de Fourcroy in 1810, year of its election to the Academy of Science.

In 1815, it receives the legion of honor. In 1825, it is named baron by Charles X, after having found the means of saving moisture the frescos of the Gros painter on the cupola of the Pantheon. He is elected like deputy of Yonne (1827-1831), and is named even of France by Louis-Philippe in 1832.

In 1814, it Marie with Humblot-Told Victorine, little girl of Nicolas Conte, and takes part in the industrial activities of its in-laws, in particular the manufacture of the pencils. In addition to the invention of the cobalt blue, it also develops a manufactoring process of white-lead (1803).

He is senior of the Faculty of Science of 1821 with 1840. He is president of the Company for the encouragement of national industry, of died of Jean-Antoine Chaptal (of which he was a close relation) in 1832 until in 1845, where he yields his place to the chemist Jean-Baptiste Dumas. In 1849, it buys the castle of the Madeleine in the the Eure, where it exerts during three years its talent in a wing of the castle by making its laboratory there.

  • Its name is registered on the lathe Eiffel.
  • Without it being really a homage, it inspired with Victor Hugo, with which it was friendly, the name of the character of Thénardier in the novel the Poor wretches . Indeed, Victor Hugo wished to make pass from 16 to 10 the daily number of work hours of the children, it with what Thénard was opposite.
