Louis Ier of Bavaria (1173-1231)

Louis Ier of Bavaria , known as Louis de Kelheim, born with Kelheim in 1173 of the dynasty of the Wittelsbach, died assassinated in its birthplace in 1231. True founder of the duchy of Bavaria, that it controlled of 1183 with 1231, and of which it establishes the first capital with Landshut, it was moreover Count Palatine of the Rhine of 1214 with 1227.

Wire of Othon Ier of Bavaria (1117-1183) and Agnes of Mainz, Louis Ier of Bavaria married in 1204 Ludmilla of Bohemia, which founded the monastery cistercian of Seligenthal with died of her husband. Only one child is resulting from this union, Othon II of Bavaria.

Louis de Kelheim succeeded his father Othon Ier with the head of the duchy as of the ten years age, his uncle and his mother ensuring the direction of the businesses until his majority. By a skilful policy and an advantageous marriage, it reinforced the position of the line of Wittelsbach. By founding new competitor grantings on Isar (Landshut in 1204, Pram in 1218, and Straubinger-Neustadt in 1224) it brought to treat with him the powerful bishops of Freising, Ratisbon, Salzburg, Passau and Augsburg, which drew their opulence from the trade of salt.

He recognized the applicant Othon IV as king, a bet which was worth then (1208) rise to him with the row in duke in Bavaria. After the excommunication of Othon IV, it became in favor as from 1211 of the king Hohenstaufen Frederic II; choice sanctioned favorably by the defeat of Othon IV with the Battle of Bouvines: it is rewarded in 1214 for the title for Count Palatine for the Rhine by the new emperor. It engaged in 1221 in the crusade of Egypt, but was made prisoner and had to pay ransom for its release.

He died victim of an attack on the bridge of Kelheim in 1231. His/her son made cut the bridge the following year and converts the door of guard ordering the bridge into votive vault.

Louis Ier of Bavaria was buried with the monastery Benedictine of Scheyern. He is ascending direct kings of Bavaria, dukes in Bavaria, of Elisabeth de Wittelsbach, current princes de Bavière, of the emperor François-Joseph of Austria.
