Louis Claude de Saulces de Freycinet , born with Montélimar the August 8th 1779 and died in the field of Freycinet with Saulce-sur-Rhône in the Drome the August 18th 1842, is a geologist and geographer French.

Biography

He takes part in the scientific exhibition with the southern lands (1800-1803) directed by the commander Baudin, in the capacity as second of the captain Hamelin on the Naturaliste , which returns to France in 1802. He joined forwarding in 1803 on board the Casuarina , goélette of which he received the command. But the commander Baudin dies on September 16th, 1803 with the Ile de France and Casuarina is disarmed.

It embarks with his brother Louis-Henri, become ordering forwarding, on board the Géographe , and they return to France in 1804, where it asks a leave. It is affected then with the deposit of the charts and plans of the navy, where it completes the historical part of the work started on the Naturaliste with François Péron, which its death left unfinished, Voyage of discovered with the southern lands 1800-1804 .

In 1811, it is promoted commander and, on June 6th, 1814, it marries Rose Marie Pinon. May 27th, 1817, it receives the mission of directing a forwarding of Circumnavigation “with an aim of determining the figure of the sphere, of studying the terrestrial magnetism and of collecting all the objects of natural history which could contribute to the advance of science”.

Commander Uranie , with for second Louis Isidore Duperrey, it weighs the anchor to Toulon on December 17th, 1817, with on his board several scientists, of which Jacques Arago, and a stowaway.

This stowaway, discovered soon, is not other than Rose, his wife, vêtue like a man and who will take again his ladies' garments only after having passed Gibraltar. On board, it shows ascending moral on the crew, never deals with the scientific work but égaye everyone by its recitals of guitar. The names of Rose Point and Rose Handle were given to two parts of the coast which touch the Cape Freycinet in Australia; the name of Rose was given by her husband to an island discovered on October 21st, 1819 to the east of the Archipel of the Navigators (Samoa): “I called it the Rose island, of the name of a person who is extremely expensive to me”, he in the book of edge writes. As for Rose, she writes: “It is thus done by it, here is my name attached to a little place of the sphere; quite small, indeed, because the envieux ones will grant perhaps only the name of small island to him. ”

The voyage of Louis-Claude is a scientific success. It makes experiments in the Cape, with the Mauritius, Timor, in New Guinea, with the the Northern Marianna Islands and Sandwich, determines in 1819 the position of the islands of the Danger, fact stopover with Sydney where it is devoted to important studies on magnetism and gravity. It collects many information of geography, ethnography, physics and botany. Turning over to France by the Cape Horn, Uranie , pushed by a sudden strong gale, is projected on an underwater rock, not registered on the vague charts of the time, on February 14th, 1820, near the Falkland Islands. Freycinet saves however, not only the crew, but also all the scientific work.

It succeeds in finding a three-masted ship, the Mercury , which it buys with Anglo-American. Renamed Physicienne , the boat weighs the anchor on May 8th and reached Le Havre on November 13rd, 1820.

Elected official member of the Academy of Science in 1825, it takes part in the creation of the Société of geography.
