Louis Alexis Desmichels
Louis Alexis Desmichels , general French, born with Worthy the March 13rd 1779, died in 1845
Soldier with the 13th regiment of hussards in year II, it passed in year IV, in the company of the horse guides of the Armée with Italy, made the Campagne of Egypt and became sergeant there.
Of return in France with Napoleon Bonaparte, it was named marshal-of-home, was distinguished with Marengo, and entered as second lieutenant the hunters to horse of the guard of the consuls. With the Battle of Ulm, this officer, then lieutenant, surprised in front of Nuremberg the Austrian rear-guard, and, with the head of 30 hunters, made low put the weapons at 300 men of infantry. After this first success, it melted with its group on a big battalion, and taken 400 men and 2 flags with the enemy. To the noise of the shooting, dragons of the Tower came to charge the winners; but they were put soon unrolls some and gave up 25 parts of gun, a military case and 150 prisoners. After this action, lieutenant Desmichels was named captain, officer of the Légion of honor, and some time afterwards, colonel of the 31e of hunters with horse.
He was also distinguished in the course from the countryside from 1813, in Italy, and made with a great distinction, the countryside of France of 1815.
During the Hundred Days, it ordered in Belgium as colonel with the 4th regiment of hunters with horse. Bachelor the November 25th 1815, it was given in activity in 1821 and promoted colonel of the regiment of hunters of the the Ardennes (3rd hunters).
Brigadier the July 30th 1823, it ordered the 2nd subdivision of the 7th military division (Drome). After the Revolution of July 1830, Louis-Philippe Ier entrusted to him the department of the Finistere, and in 1832, a brigade of cavalry around Weissembourg.
Sent in 1833 in Algeria, it is named ordering province of Oran. Since the occupation of this city, the Garabat S, whose tribes lived the valley of the Sig, with twelve miles of Oran, had not ceased fighting against the French domination: the Desmichels general solved to get rid of these neighbors. He directed against them (May 8th) 2.000 men of all weapons, and removed four their camps. 300 Arabs were killed, the destroyed Douar S, the women, the children made captive, the removed herds.
In the same month, 10.000 Arabs, including 9.000 riders, came to camp with three miles of Oran: the Desmichels general made throw, in front of the place, the foundations of a Blockaus, intended to cover the not yet completed fortifications. The 27, the Arab columns attacked the city and the blockaus; Abd-el-Kader ordered them. After a fierce combat, it had to raise the camp, after having lost 800 men; the French counted two dead and 30 wounded.
The June 5th of the same year, the Desmichels general seized the bridge of Arzew, whose occupation was to facilitate the attack of the important town of Mostaganem, occupied by the Turkish S.
The July 27th, to the head of its division, it entered this city and strengthened itself there. Attacked by the Kabyles, it pushed back them with energy and made them wipe considerable losses. In the moment when Mostaganem was defended, the general had detached against the perjuries Zmélias, the colonel Of the Pond. Forwarding succeeds; but, attacked to the return by the exasperated Arabs, the task force was going to succumb under the number, when the Desmichels general ran and released it.
After several brilliant deeds, this general was replaced in Oran by the general Trézel, and accepted, in reward of his control, his promotion with the rank of lieutenant-general the December 31st 1833.
But, with the return of a forwarding against the Tribe S, the February 4th 1834, after having beaten Abd El-Kader it signs with this last the Traité Desmichels according to which France recognizes the authority of the emir on all the Algerian West.
This treaty temporarily made it disgrace. Nevertheless, it was as of the following year high with the rank of major general and charged with the government of the Corsica . The May 30th 1837 it signs with the General Thomas-Robert Bugeaud and Abd El-Kader the Traité of Tafna.
Mr. Desmichels was called in 1838 with the command of the 17th military division (Corsica). He formed then part of the committee of cavalry.
