Louis Thiébaut Ihler , born in 1756 and died in 1793 is a Général French during the period of the French revolution

Biography

This one came in the world to Thann, the May 16th 1756. It began its military career while entering to the service from the regiment Royal-Bavaria (become later Royal-Hesse-Darmstadt) in February 1774, as a Sous-lieutenant. Time “to make his classes”, supervised by far through his brother and his father, Louis-Thiébaut passed lieutenant as a second in 1777, then first lieutenant in 1779, first mate in November 1782, and finally aide-de-camp of the marshal Luckner, on April 1st 1791. Its fast advance is especially due to the favors of Luckner, combined with the emigration of the noble ones. Named colonel of the 8° regiment of dragons in June 1792, it did not join its unit, Luckner having wished to keep it as aide-de-camp But this last lost at this time there any credibility with the eyes of the capacity, and its disgrace involved that of Louis Thiébaut partly.

Without employment, there was fortunately not worried, and remained of availability in Paris of November 1792 to January 1793. He lived closely the effervescence which preceded the execution by Louis XVI, the January 21st 1793, and undoubtedly he was charmed to turn over to fight, named with the Armée with the Rhine the January 26th.

Louis Thiébaut was then named Général of provisional brigade by Custine the April 6th 1793 and was placed at the camp of Lauterbourg.

But it was not included in the organization of the staffs of the May 15th 1793, whereas the war beat full sound and that Robespierre and them his took again little by little the things in hand.

Officially, it was to cease its functions on June 1st, but did not remain about it less with the Army of the Rhine.

It is by a heroic act which cost him the life, that it bequeathed its name must with the posterity. Then Commander the 2nd regiment of Dragon S, it fights in August 1793 to try to take again guns which the enemy with the attack of the lines of Wissembourg had removed, in Jockrim in Palatinat. Made indignant by the retreat of its troops vis-a-vis the Austrians of Wurmser, wounded twice, it however launches out to the attack of Hessois to the head of its Dragons. It finally is struck with died of a blow of saber, and fall from its horse. Before dying, he encourages his riders not to fold up himself while shouting “Lives the republic”, and while asking his soldiers to withdraw his badges to him, so that the enemy does not realize that their general died…

To take again in hand the men, the Committee of Public Hello will name with the head of the Army of the Rhine Pichegru, and with that of the Moselle Hoche. Those will push back the Austro-Prussians, and Wissembourg will be definitively released on December 26th.

The wars in Europe did nothing but start. The Revolution was right of the members of Terror, but a young ambitious general started to make speak about him. He was called Napoleon Bonaparte. Its thirst for battles would lead it to put Europe at fire and blood. The combat were not to cease which 22 years later…

The town of Thann, in Haut-Rhin, gave in homage to the family of Louis Thiébaut, his name with the one of its streets, the " street of the Ihler" generals;.
