Louis-Nazaire Bégin

Louis-Nazaire Bégin (January 10th 1840 - July 18th 1925) was a Man of the church and a professor Québécois. He was the Archevêque of Quebec of 1898 until his death.

Biography

Native of Lévis, Louis-Nazaire Bégin made studies with Rome and taught with the Université Laval, the Séminaire of Quebec and the Teacher training school Laval. It was ordered priest the June 10th 1865, at the twenty-five years age.

Leon XIII names it successively bishop of Chicoutimi in 1888, bishop coadjutor of Quebec in 1891 then archbishop of Quebec in 1898.

Its principal consecrator was Elzéar-Alexandre Taschereau. Bégin devoted itself eight bishops, of which the archbishop Louis-Joseph-Napoleon-Paul Bruchési.

He fights against the Rural migration and founds catholic newspapers. He is named cardinal by Pie X the May 25th 1914. He is also Cardinal-priest of the parish of Saint-Vital.

Having played a big role in the Canadian clergy during several decades, he dies the July 18th 1925. ----
