Louis-Maïeul Chaudon

Louis-Maïeul Chaudon is a French biographer born in Provence in 1737, died in 1817.
It entered to the Bénédictins of the Abbaye of Cluny. He is known by:
- avenged great men, or Examination of the judgments related by Mr. of V. and some other philosophers to several famous men, with a great number of critical remarks… per Mister of Fine sands (L. - M. Chaudon and others), Lyon, J. Mr. Barret, 1769 to read on line)
- a New historical Dictionary , which it published in 1766, Avignon, 4 volumes in-8, and which was followed of 7 other quickly exhausted editions. He was carried to 13 volumes in one 8th edition, published with Lyon in 1804, with Antoine-François Delandine, and to 21 in a recasting due to Louis Marie Prudhomme, 1810 - 1812. An edition in 30 volumes, historical, critical and bibliographical Dictionary, containing the lives of the famous men… followed by a shortened dictionary of mythologies and a chronological table of the most remarkable événemens which took place since the beginning of the world… , under the direction of J.D. Goignoux, and re-examined by L.M. Chaudon and A.F. Delandine, is appeared on the presses of Ménard and Desenne, in 1821-1823 (to read on line).

It is also the Dictionary of Chaudon which was used as a basis for the dictionary To crack: historical Dictionary or History shortened of the men who had a name by the genius, the talens, the virtues, errors, since the beginning of the world until our days, by the abbot F.X. To crack. New edition re-examined… on 3rd… T.I VIII. - Supplement with the historical Dictionary of the abbot F.X. To crack forming the continuation of the new edition… J. Bocous and the abbots J.B. - One still has of Chaudon a Dictionnaire antiphilosophic , published in 1767, where it fights the attacks of Voltaire against the religion, while returning justice with the extraordinary talents of this writer.
His/her brother is the abbot Esprit Joseph Chaudon.
He gave the materials to him which he had gathered for the Bibliothèque of a man of taste, or Opinion on the choice of the best books written in our language on all the kinds of sciences and literature , by L. Mr. D.V. (abbot L. - M. Chaudon), Avignon, impr. J. Blery, 1772 (to read on line).
