Louis-Joseph de Montcalm

Resulting from a noble family of dress originating in the Rouergue, born with the castle of Candiac, he was baptized with Vauvert (Gard), city close, whose hamlet bears its name today. At the nine years age, on August 16th, 1721, it receives a commission of sign in the Régiment of Hainaut. Eight years later, it obtains at strong price a commission of captain in the same regiment. It takes part in the War of succession of Poland and in that of Austria where it is used in the Rhineland in the armies ordered by the Maréchal as Saxony and the marshal duke of Berwick. At the time when bursts the War of succession of Austria, it obtains the station of aide-de-camp of the general lieutenant Philippe Charles of Fare and it is wounded during the seat in Prague. March 6th 1743, it acquires the load of colonel of the Régiment of Resident of Auxerre and is honoured with the title of Chevalier of Saint-Louis in April of the following year. This same year, it takes part in the victorious countryside of Italy. June 16th 1746, always vis-a-vis the Austrians, it is announced at the time of unhappy the Bataille of Pleasure, where it receives five blows of saber. It is wounded and made captive when its regiment is destroyed. In 1747, it is named Brigadier by Louis XV and flies to fight and be made wound with the combat of the Plate (Italy).

After 31 years in the army, it counted already 11 campaigns and 5 wounds. It is sent to Quebec in 1756 as commander of the French troops in North America during the War of conquest. In spring 1756, it is named brigadier for the operations in News-France. Its first campaigns against the Britanniques are major successes. It increases defenses of Fort Ticonderoga on the Lac Champlain. It captures and destroys Fort Oswego on the Lake Ontario in 1756. Its victory with Fort William Henry in 1757 is wasted by its Amerindian allies. It gains an unhoped-for victory with Fort Chime in 1758. With the autumn of this same year, one grants to him a promotion with the rank of general lieutenant: nothing less than the second degree in the French military hierarchy. It supports the seat of the Ville of Quebec during nearly three months before being mortally wounded at the time of the Bataille of the plains of Abraham, lost in front of the British forces ordered by James Wolfe. With the anguish, it would have had a small discussion with its surgeon:

How long does it remain me to live?
- A few hours hardly.
- So much better, I will not see the English in Quebec.
