Louis-Henri Delarageaz
Jean Louis-Henri Delarageaz , of a former family of Préverenges, (October 9th, 1807 with Préverenges - March 14th, 1891 with Préverenges) is a revolutionist and politician of Vaud whose career, particularly long, is spread out over 42 years. He was also federal colonel of artillery.
Parents
His/her father, François-Samuel Delarageaz (1770-1836), husband of Louise-Georgette Moyard (1778-1863), of Préverenges, is an easy countryman, owner of the inn of Star with Préverenges, municipal secretary, assessor of the district court of the circle of Ecublens and direct deputy to the Large Council of Vaud of the same circle of 1824 to 1828.
Louis-Henri marries his small cousin Louise-Charlotte Bron (1815-1888), girl of François-Henri Bron (1787-1840) of Bremblens, owner farmer-wine grower and captain of police officers, and Louise-Suzanne Moyard (1790-1865) of Préverenges. Of this marriage, it will have 3 wire: Auguste Louis (1836, died in 3 months), Louis-Charles Delarageaz (1837-1906) (cf article) and Alexis David Henri (1844-1869), deceased with Hyères of tuberculosis during its studies at the medical college of Paris. Its grandson Louis Delarageaz will marry a small-niece of Antoine Vessaz.
Childhood and studies
Louis-Henri Delarageaz is born on October 9th, 1807 with Préverenges. To fourteen years, it spends one year to German-speaking Switzerland, with Zofingue. After obtaining its patent of land-surveyor in 1831, he works with the development of the famous topographic chart of Guillaume-Henri Dufour, with the chart military of Vaud and land surveying many communes of Vaud like with the wood of Risoux, which enables him to traverse all the Canton of Vaud and to be made known its population. In parallel, Delarageaz follows courses of right as external to the academy of Lausanne, but fails in its attempt to reach the body of notaries in 1838.
Political career
Delarageaz is interested very early in the communist ideas which penetrate in the Canton of Vaud, in particular by reading Etienne Cabet, Charles Fourier and Pierre Joseph Proudhon. It will bind friendship and will maintain a correspondence with this last. He is member of Schutzverein, Swiss Youth, the National association and questeur of the section of Vaud of the Company of federal safety. Since 1835, he becomes president of the General advice of Préverenges and chair military Company of the farmers of his commune. The following year, he is member of the committee of the section of theSwiss ones. In 1838, it founds the democratic library of Morges. In 1841, he is elected appointed with the circle of Ecublens, as a radical. Delarageaz becomes Syndic of his commune in 1842. At that time, he is also member of the masonic cabin Espérance and Cordiality. The year according to, he is founding member of the democratic circle of Lausanne. In December 1844, it founds patriotic Association to react to the recall of the Jésuites to the state education by the Canton of Lucerne. Delarageaz is, with his/her friend Henri Druey, one of the chiefs of the revolution of Vaud of 1845.C' is besides Delarageaz which will proclaim on the Esplanade of Montbenon, with Lausanne, the advent of the Radical party on February 14th, 1845, after the inversion of the old mode. March 5th of the same year, he is elected president of the Grand the Council of Vaud.
Although reticent with the idea to enter to the Council of State of Vaud, Delarageaz is elected there on March 6th, 1845. There will remain 29 years there, (the longest mandate of the history of Vaud after that 36 years of the adviser of State Louis Etienne Jan of 1804 to 1840) of 1845 to 1862, then of 1866 to 1878 (departments: Soldier, Public works). It is interesting to note that it is under its government that are carried out the damming up of the the Rhone and the cleansing of the Broye and the Sphere and that create for themselves the first railway network, the Building and loan association and the Cantonal Banque Of Vaud of which he is the president in 1847, the rural code, the compulsory insurance against the damage of the fire, for example. In 1847, he is founding member and president of the young military company of the patriots of Ecublens. November 18th of the same year, following the victory of the Protestant cantons at the time of the War of Sonderbund, it is named by the Diète federal police chief with Freiburg with Xavier Stockmar, then on December 2nd, federal police chief in Valais with Stefano Franscini and Emil Frey. Delarageaz becomes the proven owner of the Canton of Vaud upon the departure in Bern of his/her friend Henri Druey in 1848 with whom it had repurchased the “Short story writer of Vaud”, genuine vehicle of the radical thought of Vaud. In 1856, it is named federal police chief by the Federal council with Maurice Barman attached to the Sardinian government with Turin in order to obtain from this same government the lowering of the tunnel of the collar of Menouve. It returns to the National council in 1857 when it will sit until 1881. Its government is reversed by a coalition of liberals and radical lefts, but it reinstates the Council of State in 1866. In 1868, Delarageaz is named by the deputy Federal council Switzerland with Peter Conradin von Planta to negotiate the line border of Poschiavo between the Italy and the Suisse.
At the end of its career, Delarageaz distancie more and more of the radical party, gathered around its disciple Louis Ruchonnet. After a modest re-election with the Council of State on March 21st, 1878, he resigns the following day of it. With the end of the year, he is re-elected with the National council where he will sit until 1881. He resigns of the Grand the Council the following year. He becomes member of the international League of peace and freedom with Geneva in 1879. Delarageaz still appears to condemn the constitutional project of 1885. He dies on March 14th, 1891 in his property of Rionzi with Préverenges which he had been made build in 1842, probably by his/her comrade in arms cantonal the artillery architect and colonel Louis Wenger.
Military career
Simultaneously with its political activity, Delarageaz embraces also a brilliant military career. Officer since 1829, it is promoted Lieutenant-colonel in the federal Staff during the Guerre of Sonderbund during which it puts the seat in front of Freiburg. He on several occasions becomes federal Colonel of Artillerie in 1855 after having ordered the camp of Bière (Vaud) (1849, 1851,1853) and that of Thoune (1852). At the time of the Business of Neuchâtel with the Prussia, it is named by the federal military department on October 14th, 1856 ordering of the Artillerie place of Basle where it is in charge of work of fortification of small Basle (with balance of Divisionnaire) then, on December 19th of the same year, it will belong to the council of war under the presidency of the federal adviser Friedrich Frey-Herosé, with 7 other colonels and the general Guillaume-Henri Dufour. Delarageaz will be released from the military service in 1876 with thanks.
Conclusion
Great landowners land with his wife (possessions in the communes of Préverenges, Bremblens, Echichens, Saint-Saphorin-on-Morges, Romanel-sur-Morges, Lonay, Echandens, Bougy-Villars, Perroy, Féchy, and Pully), Delarageaz could devote her life to the policy thanks to the latter, woman of head which could manage their great agricultural domains and wine, the remuneration of an adviser of State being until 1859 of 2 ' 400 francs per annum. Delarageaz incarnates the radical revolution of 1845. It represents the country wing of the radical party. Near to the countryside, there remained a long time the most popular citizen of the Canton of Vaud whose population was found completely in him. According to an anecdote told by “the Genevese”, Delarageaz says one day, by inserting the fist in its pocket: “I hold all in it the Canton of Vaud”!
Louis-Henri Delarageaz is buried with his wife in the family square of the cemetery of Préverenges where its monument always exists. In 1977, the commune of Préverenges inaugurated the Esplanade Louis-Henri Delarageaz, located with the mouth of the Level. A bust bronzes some was set up there in 1979.
