Louis-Ernest Barrias

Louis-Ernest Barrias (Paris, April 13rd 1841 - Paris, February 4th 1905) is a French sculptor who excelled at the end of the 19th century in the neo-classic style.

Biography

It is resulting from a family of artists, his father was painter on Porcelaine and his/her older brother, Felix-Joseph Barrias, will be a recognized academic painter. The Louis-Ernest young person directs himself towards artistic studies. Entered with the School of the Art schools of Paris in 1858, it forsakes painting to be directed towards the sculpture under the direction of François Jouffroy. At 23 years, it obtains the Prix of Rome and is engaged on the building site of the Opéra of Paris. It will produce thereafter many carved works, the marble majority, in a style of a pure neo-classic academism. In 1881, it is rewarded by a medal for Honor for the Art schools and fact knight of the Légion of honor in 1878, officer in 1881, commander in 1900, the artist replaces Dumont with the Institut in 1884 then succeeds Cavelier as professor at the School of the Art schools.

The major part of its work can be seen in Paris, in public statuary, with the Musée of Orsay or the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise.

  • Statue out of marble of Virgile, (1865) in the staircase of the Hotel of Païva on the Fields-Élysées.
  • the Oath of Spartacus , large marble starting from a plaster carried out with the Villa Médicis in 1869, installed in 1875 with the Garden of Tileries, close to the large round basin.
  • the First funeral , bronzes (1878), this group which represents Adam and Eve carrying the body of Abel received the medal of honor of the Art schools, museum of the Art schools of Nice.
  • Tombe of Thomas Seams with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise (1879)
  • Tombe of Anatole of the Forging mill to the Cemetery of the Father-Lachaise (1893)
  • the Defense of Paris , bronzes patriotic set up in 1883 with the roundabout of Courbevoie. This statue, which replaced a Napoleon i deposited in 1848 by the revolutionists, is at the origin of the name of the district of Defense.
  • Jeanne d' Arc , gilded marble, in monunent on the esplanade of the basilica of Bonsecours, close to Rouen, inaugurated in 1894.
  • Nature being revealed with Science , marble, onyx, granite, malachite, lapis lazuli, 1899, Musée of Orsay.
