Lotus 16
This single-seater of Formula 1, Formule 2 is the last of the manufacturer with a front engine. The tubular steel frame was covered with a very aerodynamic aluminum body. The suspensions were independent on the 4 wheels and the brakes discs.
The 18 was used in Grand Prix (Formula 1) with a four-cylinder motor Coventry Climax FPF of 2000cc or rebored with 2207cc developing approximately 200ch and in F2 with the same type of engine in configuration 1500cc. In Grand Prix, the engine was tilted on the side and in skew compared to the axis of the car to lower the center of gravity and to decrease frontal surface. In fact the driveshaft passed to the left of the pilot. This technical solution was the cause of innumerable problems. In Formula 2, the engine was in the axis.
With the 16, Lotus did not have discounted success, Graham Hill and the beginner Jim Clark making a success of only one thin 6th place in Grand Prix.
Lotus 16 was replaced by the Lotus 18 with back engine in 1960 and it was the beginning of success for the TEAM Lotus.
