Lothaire de France

Lothaire (941 Laon - † March 2nd 986 Laon), is a king of the Francs (954 - 986), wire of Louis IV of Overseas and Gerberge of Saxony.

It succeeds his father immediately and is crowned on November 12th 954 with the Saint-Remi abbey of Rheims by the archbishop Artaud. Having refused any division with his/her brother Charles, this last is provided in June 977 with the duchy of Low-Lotharingie, by his/her cousin the emperor Othon II of Germanic.

Of a mistress supposed to be a sister of the count Robert, mayor of the palate of his brother Charles of Lorraine, Lothaire is the father of two illegitimate wire:

  • Arnoul or Arnould (before 967 - † 1021), archbishop of Rheims
  • Richard († after 991)
Of this marriage it will have:
  • Louis V king of the Francs (967 - † 987)
  • Eudes or Otto, canon in Rheims (970 - † 985)
Incompetent to tie against his adversaries of the effective coalitions, Lothaire vainly tries to limit the capacities of the duke of the Francs Hugues Large the, then of his son Hugues Capet. In order to make sure of Lotharingie which could become the base of a reconquest of the capacity at the expense of large of the Francie Western one, Lothaire launches in 985 a forwarding against Verdun, to which the archbishop of Rheims Adalbéron is opposed, hostile with a new conflict within the kingdom franc.
The king then seeks to make condemn Adalbéron for treason, which determines the evolution of the archbishop, up to that point legitimist, in favor of Hugues Capet and against the Carolingien Charles of Low-Lorraine.
Whereas it is about to carry out a new forwarding against Liege and Cambrai, it dies in Laon on March 2nd, 986. It is buried in Saint-Remi of Rheims.
