It succeeds his father immediately and is crowned on November 12th 954 with the Saint-Remi abbey of Rheims by the archbishop Artaud. Having refused any division with his/her brother Charles, this last is provided in June 977 with the duchy of Low-Lotharingie, by his/her cousin the emperor Othon II of Germanic.
Of a mistress supposed to be a sister of the count Robert, mayor of the palate of his brother Charles of Lorraine, Lothaire is the father of two illegitimate wire:

- Richard († after 991)
- Louis V king of the Francs (967 - † 987)
- Eudes or Otto, canon in Rheims (970 - † 985)
The king then seeks to make condemn Adalbéron for treason, which determines the evolution of the archbishop, up to that point legitimist, in favor of Hugues Capet and against the Carolingien Charles of Low-Lorraine.
