Los Haïtises

Los Haïtises is a National park in the North-East of the Dominican Republic, which extends from bay of San Lorenzo at the southern and south-western zone of bay of Samana which in fact part, on a surface of 208 km ². Haiti means in language taïno " zone montagneuse". The Taino being the first inhabitants of the island and their preserved caves testify to their presence.

It is about a formation dating from the Miocène which was submerged then with emerged during different movement tectonics. The park bears name because of its irregular Topographie made many calcareous stone impenetrable hills of approximately 500 meters in height. In spite of a poor ground, the frequent rains and strong moisture allowed the development of a typical vegetation of the subtropical wet forest. This park is a maze vegetable impressing of Fjord S deep which is lost in forests of mangroves and lianas. Many caves communicate between them.

This reserve present of many invaluable varieties of trees which go from the Cèdre to the Acajou or of the Palétuvier.

This park is also rich by its fauna, in particular by the presence of the manati (Trichechus manatus), the Solenodonte a small insectivorous mammal originating in the island and the Chauves mouse in the caves. Between the reptiles one finds the presence of the boa (Epicrates striatus), and several species of marine tortoises. and 110 species of the 270 fish species indexed in Dominican Republic. In the island with the birds, it is not rare to observe Pélicans, Perroquet S, or of the water cocks whose certain species are in process of extinction.

The visits of this park are done by the way of water starting from Sabana, Samaná or Sanchez.
