Lorris

Lorris is a Commune Frenchwoman, located in the department of the Loiret and the area Center.

Denomination

The name of Lorris would come:
  • for the ones, of successive deteriorations of Lauriacum, in Loriacum then Lorriz;
  • for others, it would act of a deterioration of “Loys Roy” (Laws of the King)…

The correct pronunciation of the name is (while rolling the R , with a S final dumb man) but, inexplicably, since the Second world war, this pronunciation almost disappeared with the profit from a (without r' rolled). It had will perhaps there to dissociate communes having a close consonance: Lorrez (delivery ') and Loury. No one did not think of making rename the commune in Lorris-in-Gâtinais or Lorris-the-Habit .

Geography

Lorris is located at approximately 130 km in the south of Paris, in the southernmost fringe of the Gâtinais, roughly halfway of Montargis and the Sully-on-Loire and to 60 km of Orleans.

The city gave its name to the Massif of Lorris, the portion Eastern of the Forêt of Orleans.

History

This small town, which was in fact the appointment of hunting of the first Capétiens at the 12th century (and where, so they maintained a court (enough reduced) and signed “often grinds parchments” between two hunts) is famous for four facts:

the Charter of Lorris

It was promulgated in 1134 by the king of France Louis VI the Large one (1108 - 1137).

It gave to Lorris known “privileges and franknesses” under the name of habits, which made of Lorris the first free commune of France.

Guillaume de Lorris

Lorris is the native soil of Guillaume de Lorris which lived approximately of 1200 with 1238. He is joint author of the Romance of the Rose with Jean de Meung which finished it later 50 years.

the peace of Lorris

The peace of Lorris was signed the October 30th 1243 between Raimon VII, count de Toulouse, and the king of France, Saint Louis. The two men thus renewed the treated of Paris which they had already concluded the April 12th 1229 under the aegis of the mother from St Louis, Blanche of Castille. Raimon VII renonça at the towns of Narbonne and Albi and promised to make, itself, hunting for the heretics, the “cathares”. This treaty definitively put an end to the sufferings Albigensian and the sling of the barons of midday against holy Louis.

Consequently occasion, Raimon VII gave his/her Jeanne daughter, in marriage with the brother of king de France, Alphonse.

The Massacre of the Crossroads of Orleans

At the time of the Second world war, the department of the Loiret was one of the high places of the Résistance and paid a heavy tribute with the Déportation. This is particularly true for Lorris.

Located in full forest of Orleans, in the solid mass of Lorris, it is with this crossroads (called the Crossroads of Resistance today) that was massacred the August 14th 1944 more than 50 Maquisards taken refuge in forest. Behind their tombs, the forest house set fire to by the occupant who had locked up the victims there, remained in the state. This is not without pointing out the massacre of Oradour-on-Glane perpetrated by the disaster Division Das Reich.

Religious heritage

  • the church Notre-Dame de Lorris , beautiful church Romance of XIIe containing of large Organ (1501, which does of them the ones of oldest of Europe). These last were restored between 1970 and 1974 and are classified historic buildings. A side chapel of XVIe century contains several polychrome statuettes.
