History

The city (of which the name Lorme was written a few decades ago) comes from the Arbre the Orme (Latin ulmus). An elm is represented besides on the Blason of the city. This name undoubtedly rises from the elms which formerly furnished the Field with the Stage, called later Place of Ormeaux, and which is the Course of November 11th today, i.e. the Walks .

Even if vestiges of a Roman villa would have been found near the old way which connected Autun to Orleans, one rather locates the origins of Lormes around the 5th century. The name of Lorma (?) is mentioned in a document gone back to 1085, but the first known lord of Lormes is Séguin, Seguinus ab Ulmo , which lived at the end of the 11th century.

Like all the communes of France, Lormes paid a heavy tribute at the time of the Great War. The jalopy with narrow gauge railway which connects Lormes to Corbigny and Saulieu was inaugurated in 1901. It transports wood and is also equipped with cars for the travellers. It spends three hours to connect Lormes to Saulieu. It will disappear definitively in 1939.

If Lormes were directly saved by the First World War, it is concerned with the Seconde. The presence of wood offering of the natural hiding-places is favourable with the development of the maquis like the Maquis Camille . The men of the maquis, which know the area perfectly, badger the troops with occupation which are ventured little in the Forêt S. on June 12th 1944, whereas the unloading has just taken place in Normandy, F.F.I, undoubtedly grayed by the future victory, are installed on the roofs and attack a convoy which crosses the city. The Germans take at once as an hostage the men who are there. Eights will be shot.
