Lori de Kuhl

The Lori de Kuhl ( Vini kuhlii ) is a Psittacidae group of the Loriinae which lives in the tropical forests of the Kiribati and of the French Polynésie.

Description

Lori de Kuhl measures approximately 19 cm. Its plumage is overall two-tone: green for the upper parts and red for lower. The nape of the neck and the thighs are purple intense. The belly is yellow, the orange nozzle and the brown irises.

The immature ones have the marbled lower parts of purple, the nozzle and the dark brown irises.

Habitat and behavior

This bird attends the littoral forests of palm trees where it only moves or in couple.

Distribution

Lori de Kuhl has a surface of distribution limited to some islands of Polynesia (Rimatara and Tubuai), French Polynesia and in the southernmost islands of Cook where it was introduced before XIIIe century.

It was introduced into certain equatorial islands of Sporades and the archipelago of Kiribati.

Statute of conservation

Lori de Kuhl is threatened of extinction because of the destruction of its habitat by the man and of plundering of the nests by the rats.

Only one population reaches 1.000 individuals, one second approximately 800 and the others of 2 (a couple on the island of Kiritimati) with 50 individuals.
