The myth of Loreleï

In the beginning, Loreleï was conceived to symbolize the passion love in the literature: in a ballade ( Zu Bacharach amndt Rheine… , 1801) of the Rhenish poet Clemens Brentano, Lorelei initially seemed the name of a woman. “Laure Lay” was misled by his/her lover. On the way of the cloister, she wants to throw a last glance of the rock on her castle. Whereas she thinks of seeing a boat moving away, she falls into the river.

Brentano wrote several variations of the topic of Loreleï. The reason for a fair and unhappy woman who combs herself on a rock appears for the first time in its Rhenish tale as from 1810.

Later, it passed from a phantom to a femme fatale. At the end of and the beginning of the 20th century, it took the function for some poets of national symbol similar to the Valkyrie S. the literature of the 20th century was diverted this interpretation. It shows the character in many forms whose certain ironic and the myth of Lorelei perpetuates thus.

In France, it is especially known through the poem of Guillaume Apollinaire, Loreley , which one finds in the collection Alcools, or in Lorely of Gerard Labruni known as Gerard de Nerval at the time of the account of its voyage on the edges of the Rhine. Then, that for others, more interested by the music than by the literature, Lorelei, the fairy of the Rhine, will be evoked through songs like Lorelei Sebasto Cha of Hubert Felix Thiéfaine, Laura Lorelei of Jacques Higelin, Loreley of the German group Dschinghis Khan but also by artists such as The Pogues, Cocteau Twins, Theater Off Tragedy, Styx… In another register, the author of band-drawn Belgian, Roger Leloup, referred there many in the album No 2 of Yoko Tsuno: " Organ of the diable".
