Chronology

The spectacle Lord off the Dance is inspired by another older spectacle, mixing Irish clappers and folklore: Riverdance .

Michael Flatley took part in its success as a dancer, in particular as of his discovery by the public in 1994, in Eurovision of Dublin.

He disapproves the style of choreography of the spectacle and leaves the troop of Riverdance in 1996. He founds on his side another spectacle, Lord off the Dance . This one is presented on July 2nd, 1996, with the theater " The Point" in Dublin (Ireland).

This spectacle differs from Riverdance from its loss of authenticity with respect to the effects of scene, in particular by privileging the dance compared to the song. In 1997, the spectacle impresses the public of the ceremony of the Oscars. And the round of the troop ended in London, with a adapatation of " Lord off the dance" , " Feet off flames" : the road off the king in Hyde Park, on July 25th, 1998, for what was largest " show" Celtic of all times.

Flatley organizes off an adaptation of Lord the Dance in May 2000: Feet off Flames . Four simultaneous rounds then beat records of audience in Japan, in South Africa, Europe and North America.

History and composition of the spectacle

The spectacle tells the history of the people from Ireland.

" Time was suspended and Erin was the universal Goddess… The history was already written and each one knew its role. But the former clans, sitted on stone circles heard voices and the sleep of the spirits was disturbed. A power come from darkness came to defy the Lord Of The Dance" (© Unicorn Entertainment LTD 1996).

The history begins with the Small-minded person awaking the girls from the clan on an air from flute. These last dance a ballet then leave room to the chief of the clan and Seigneur of the Dance , which impresses by a " Irish Tap Dance" whose only the secrecy has to him. It is very quickly joined by all its community which accompanies it in the dance.

Then Erin comes. The goddess interprets us her first song in solo of the spectacle.

Helped by the Small-minded person, the dancers of the clan reappear then in a soft mixture of elegance and lightness, to make us discover at their head soft the Saoirse , girl Irish and representing freedom.

Came thereafter Don Dorcha , the enemy of the Lord of the Dance, taken along by its obscure troop. The Small-minded person benefits from it for the narguer.

Merrighan , the temptress, then proposes a dance of the more envoûtantes to us.

It is then a question of recalling that the dance does not make with it only the Celtic tradition, via a duet made up of two violins.

Then start again a demonstration of softness with Mesdames the ballerinas, until Merrighan causes them. But the ladies of the clan are not let make, and answer by their union which makes their force.

Arrive then the Seigneur of the Dance as a true charmer, for a revision of the men of his troop, the Seigneurs of War , under the admiring eye of these young ladies.

All this small world yields the scene to Erin and its second sung piece very resting.

Then, the small-minded person invites the whole community to meet, women and men, in a true meeting of family around the Seigneur of the Dance .

Only, the Small-minded person ventures too much far from his/her companions, and it is found very quickly vis-a-vis the Guerriers of Don Dorcha . The Small-minded person does not make the weight. And in spite of its fight to preserve the magic object that is its flute, it is made it put out of state.

The Lord of the Dance , accompanied by its army, court with its help to protect it and fight the Lord of Darkness . The battle makes rage.

Lastly, the two clans are separated by the Small-minded person, which stops the engagements, and benefits from it to make repair its rod near the Seigneur of the Dance .

After this episode, Merrighan lines up side of the forces of the evil.

It follows a piece of violins from there filled of sadness, signs ill omen.

But that does not worry the dancers of the community, who show their joy in a festival of colors plus sharp the ones that the others.

Erin dissipates this euphoria, and takes again its place in the center of the scene for the last time. Its song calms the spirits.

It is followed by the soft girl Irishwoman, Saoirse , which does not manage to charm the Seigneur of the Dance . Because the evil is already made. Its heart is already taken by provocative the Merrighan .

Unfortunately for him, it is found trapped by its diabolic charm. And he sees Don Dorcha stealing to him the title of Seigneur of the Dance by the force. But Don Dorcha is delighted too quickly. And the Small-minded person comes to help old the Seigneur of the Dance to release itself from the evil spell.

It follows from there a duel between the two chiefs of clan for the title of Seigneur of the Dance . Don Dorcha loses and is obliged to flee.

The lord regained his title thanks to the Small-minded person. He then gives his heart to Saoirse whereas all the community finds itself to celebrate the victory.

And the Celtic tradition can continue to beat full sound.

The decoration and costumes

Contrary to Riverdance, Lord off the Dance is a show with large budget. The costumes and the decorations are in greater number, but they are also more sophistiqués.
On the whole, more than thousand costumes and more than two thousand pairs of shoes were related to all four tournées.
Pyrotechnical effects, scenic work, costumes with spangles, Feet off Flames is besides the apotheosis in terms of investment since several giant screens diffuse the vidéos spectacle on each side of the enormous scene. And they are phenomenal quantities of energy, cables, of steel, and other products and ustensils which were used with each representation.
