Loophole
A fatal (or archère , archière , raière as arbalétrière after the invention of the crossbow) is an opening practiced in a defensive wall to allow the observation and the sending of projectiles. For the Gallo-Roman period, the permanent fortifications were defended only by their top. The Courtine S and the turns were full at the base and opposed to the attacks only the thickness of their construction. But when the weapons of jet, handy, had improved and acquired a longer and surer range, one did not limit oneself any more, to defend the approaches of a fortified town, to crown the parapets of crenellations; one bored openings at the base of the curtains and the various floors of the turns.
These openings appear in the fortifications of the beginning of the 12th century: enough rare then, they multiplies during the 13th century, taking part in the means of defense. About the middle of the 14th century, these openings become increasingly rare in the lower parts of defense and multiply at their top; they reappear only at the time when the artillery with fire replaces the old machines of defense.
These loopholes, or archères, bored on the level of the interior ground of the ramparts and the floors of the turns, not only made it possible to launch features of crossbow or arrows, but to as see, without being discovered, work as besieging them could try to beat or sap the works. So with the Moyen-âge they were very narrow and verticals to allow the shooting the arc on the attackers without exposing itself, their form and dimension ceased evolving/moving at the same time only the defensive armament. Thus, the vertical opening received a horizontal notch to allow a shooting according to a more important horizontal angle, then took the shape of a funnel flattened with the appearance of the firearms.
In the modern Blockhouses, the loopholes can have the shape of broad horizontal openings in order to allow the shooting with heavy weapons, covering a broad angle of ground.
