Longin the Centurion

Saint Longin the Centurion is venerated as being the soldier who bored his lance the crucifié side of Christ. According to the tradition, he died martyr with Jerusalem. The October 16th celebrates.

The tradition allots the name of Longin to the Centurion quoted as a Marc 15,39: “the centurion, who was held opposite him, exclaimed: " Really this man was sons of God! " ”.

Originating in Cappadoce, Longin served in the Roman Armée and ordered a unit in Judaea. It was, with its men, charged to ensure the crucifixion of Jesus-Christ and it accepted mission of keeping its body so that nobody could conceal it nor to say that it was ressuscity. It would have converted with the sight of the wonders which accompanied the Passion by Christ.

After its death, its remainder were transported in Cappadoce and were placed in a church.

Its name, Longinus, figure on the fresco that the pope Zacharie (pope) (741-752) made carry out in the church Holy-Marie-Antique, in Rome. It is one of oldest the known representation of the Crucifixion.
