Longeville-the-Saint-Avold

Longeville-the-Saint-Avold is a common French of: 3800 inhabitants located in the department of the the Moselle. It is localized in the natural area of the Warndt and in the basin of life of the Moselle-is.

Longeville-the-Saint-Avold is located at 3 km of Saint-Avold and 38 km of Metz.

History

One finds the trace of the commune as of the 12th century, in the acts of the bishop of Metz. Longeville is then known under the name of “Longavilla” (literally, the “long field”). In 1314, this name is specified with the addition of “ Longavilla Juxta Sanctum Martinum in Glandaria ”, in other words “Longeville de Saint Martin in Glandière”. In 1869, the commune takes the name which one knows from now on “Longeville-the-St-Avold”. However, following the German annexation, this name will be again changed into “Lubeln”, name still used by the elderly and even youngest. Opposite with other common natives of the Moselle region, the commune finds his French name since 1918.

  • the old abbey of St Martin of Glandières

Today transformed into convalescence and convalescent home, this abbey bénédictine was rested by the Duke of Aquitaine towards 587.

In 1215, the Vulperus abbot adds a hospital to the building. But, the successive attacks and plunderings by the troops of Albert de Brandebourg, by the Swedes, the troops of Turenne, finally by the Luxembourgers throughout XVIe and 17th century, will ruin the monument. It is thus necessary to wait until 1685 and helps it of Louis XIV so that Don Hilario de Bar restores the abbey.

The Revolution condemns the clergy, and in 1792, the building is sold to Charles Frederic Durbach. This one destroyed the church and built a potato distilling, thanks to the money gained after the sale of materials and goods of the Church.

In 1905, the abbey is resold with évêché of Metz and forms part of the order franciscain then. In 1937, a terrible fire devastates the building, but thanks to the assistance of the population, in less than two years, it is entirely renovated. After the Release, the monks continue the rehabilitation, and build a vault.

The monument is finally sold with the French health insurance system of Health insurance of Thionville in 1954, and becomes thus a Convalescence and Convalescent home.

Natural reserve

Since 1985, Longeville-the-St-Avold shelters also a voluntary natural reserve for the Chiroptère S, the first created in France by the Department of the Environment. Indeed, the sites known as of the “High Wood” and the “Castelberg” are dug of Grotte S which are used as winter refuges with the bats. Fourteen species are present, of which: Large rhinolophe, Large murine, Vespertilion with indented ears, Vespertilion de Bechstein, Barbastelle, etc
