long Sunday of engagement is a feature film carried out by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, left on the screens the October 27th 2004 (France, Suisse and Belgium) according to the book éponyme: long Sunday of engagement of Sebastien Japrisot.

Synopsis

In the trenches of the Sum during the First World War, five soldiers is shown to be itself car-mutilated to escape owe them. Condemned to dead by a martial court, they are led to an outpost named “Bingo twilight” and are given up with their fate in the No man' S Land which separates the two camps. Among them Manech, promised in marriage of the heroin of film appears, a fore-mentioned romantic lame young person Mathilde who does not believe in the death of his in love. If he had died, it would know it. Strong of this intuition, Mathilde carries out its survey and collects little by little the indices which will lead it to discover what occurred this day to “Bingo twilight”… L

Criticisms

The film attempts to describe the war with precision. On the contrary, the life in Brittany is represented in an anachronistic and whimsical way:

heroin lives in a small house vis-a-vis the sea, a true house of postcards: small flowers, fine gravel in front of the door, small windows on the floor, etc Seuls the poor had houses vis-a-vis the sea. As soon as a family had the means, she sought to shelter wind and bad weather. However obviously heroin is rich (it has a car, it travels with Paris, etc)
the house, at the end of the world, has the telephone. It is completely unrealistic.
the house is small, but has an interior staircase, whereas the accesses in the country houses were usually done by outside to preserve interior space.
the woman who deals with heroin is equipped like a country-woman with the surroundings with Paris, it does not have anything clothing of Breton of the time. In particular it does not carry a cap outside its house, which was a sign of total disrespect or prostitution.
in film, the Breton peasants have a perfect command of French, which is impossible, even if they live in the part Gallo of Brittany: at that time, the children of the peasants began to learn French at the school, and their parents never really learned it, they only spoke Breton or gallo. The characters do not even have an accent, whereas Corsica and the person who lives in south-west speak with their accent.
they read “the newspaper of Morlaix” but go “downtown” to Quimper: considering the distance for the time, the same newspaper could not be distributed in these two zones to the two ends of the department of Finistere.
coming from Paris, heroin gets out of the train to Rennes and continuous in the car: the train further went than Rennes and circulation by railway was faster than the car (except the ways in Brittany center, but in film, the dwelling is in seaside).
been engaged is called of an improbable name, Manech Langonnet, for three reasons:

Langonnet is the name of a city of the Morbihan, but an extremely rare family name.
the first name Manech does not exist into Breton.
Even if there existed, the first name is impossible, the French administration of the time prohibiting to name the children with “local” first names. One was called “François” with the registry office and “Fañch” (or another Breton form of François ) for the entourage.

The film was also withdrawn from the cinemas in Corsica of which those of Propriano following many criticisms with regard to a sentence shock pronounced by one of the characters, Ange Bassignano: " I am not French I am Corsica moi". It proves that the character of the novel of Sebastien Japrisot is Italian and not Corsica. Moreover, much from Corsicans went voluntary to be useful in the French Army during the First World War, this sentence would thus carry damage to their memory.

It would seem, despite everything, that the places changed between the book and the film (Aquitaine in the book, Brittany in film) are a wink made by the realizer. Indeed, Sebastien Japrisot having taken part in turning, it would not have let make such a change if that had been important.
