London Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews

the London Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews is a founded Protestant association the February 15th 1809 with London to spread the Christianisme protesting in the Jewish mediums.

In 1909, for its centenary, it had 222 missionaries operating throughout the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa and in America, much of them being converted Jews.

The London Society will continue its activities until in second half of the 20th century, causing sharp oppositions within the world Judaism.

The missions of the London Society were spread in many countries, including the Ethiopia or it settles in 1859 to convert the Jews Beta Israel , or Falasha . It remains active there until in the years 1920. It is paradoxically the society which will draw the attention of the world Judaism to the Falashas , causing the sending of a mission of the Alliance universal Jew in 1867, in the person of Joseph Halévy.

The means used are the sermon, the publication of newspapers ( Jewish Missionary Intelligence , Jewish Missionary Advocate , and Quarterly Notes ) and the foundation of Christian schools in Juif medium. The new will is translated into Hebrew.

It is it should be noted that the company forever developed ethnic rejection of the Jews, or Antisémitisme, wanting on the contrary “to save them”. Many leaders of Royal Society thus were of the Juifs converts, like Henry Aaron Stern (1820 - 1885), a German Jew converts in 1840, who established the missions in Ethiopia in 1859. One can also quote Michael Sargon (1795-1855), a Jewish of cochin converted in 1818 and which became the first Indian missionary of association, or Michael Aragawi, Beta Israel converted with Christianity and mission leader into Ethiopia.
