Lollapalooza

Lollapalooza is a itinerant Festival of music, wanting to be underground at the time of its creation, which furrowed the the United States and the Canada at every summer, of 1991 with 1997 inclusively. The instigator of this festival is Perry Farrel, leader of the group Jane' S Addiction, which occurred with this formation at the time of the original edition of 1991, then in the following years with his subsequent group, Porno for Pyros. The first round was in fact a pretext to make round of good-bye of Jane' S Addiction a great musical festival.

Round Lollapalooza (1991-1997)

Importance

Lollapalooza had a considerable impact on the rise of the alternative music during first half of the Années 1990. The festival was born a few months after the explosion Grunge. The summer 1992 (baptized year off grunge by Spin Magazine) accommodated two of the most popular groups resulting from Seattle, Pearl jam and Soundgarden. Members of the two formations also occurred under the name Temple off the Dog. From 1991 to 1995, Lollapalooza was often with the avant-garde of the tendencies as regards “alternative” music as one called it at the time, of indie rock'n'roll, Hip hop, Funk. The festival also made a broad place with the performances of any kind, body painting for example, public entertainers, like with the expression of ideas alternative policies.

Criticisms

Initially festival underground, celebrating the alternative music and arts, Lollapalooza quickly wiped criticisms to be become, in spite of it, too popular. One then taxed it with Mercantilisme, but the musical contents were not truly affected, although the fact of taking part in Lollapalooza contributed largely to the rise of the groups which took part in it and left them instantaneously the underground.

In 1995, the festival took again an optics plus underground, by presenting Sonic Youth at the head of poster. If Sonic Youth is legendary and well-known amateurs of the kind, its music can be inaccessible and its popularity, if one measures it in sales figures, at all does not compare with that a Smashing Pumpkins, high-speed motorboat of the preceding round.

After having boxed falls of incomes in 1995, the festival presented in 1996 its most commercial program, while inviting as heads of poster the group Metallica. The metal of this kind had never been the style recommended by Lollapalooza. Moreover, the alternative music of the beginning of the Années 1990 had carried a very hard blow to the popularity of the groups Hard rock or metal of the decade 1980. The presence of Metallica to the edition 1996 was in oneself an opposition to the gasoline even of the festival; it was to alienate many fans, and one can speculate that the festival, which was to end in a relative indifference the next summer, never truly went back from there.

The edition 1996 is however remarkable for the presence of Soundgarden, first group to be placed as one of the different heads of poster of two Lollapalooza, and for the participation of the legendary punk group The Ramones, which had announced in 1995 its separation after two decades of career. Ramones agreed to take part on invitation of Soundgarden, and prolonged their existence until the conclusion of the round 1996.

Lollapalooza in the years 2000

In 2003, Perry Farrel tried to make reappear Lollapalooza by reforming Jane' S Addiction then by inviting Audioslave and Queens off the Stone Age, inter alia, but the high prices discouraged from the fans being hustled. The attempt to organize a new round in 2004 has turned out badly and the whole was cancelled.

In 2005, instead of an itinerant festival, Farrel organizes two baptized spectacles Lollapalooza with Grant Park, Chicago. It was a success, in spite of the heat wave which struck the area. Y inter alia took part: Pixies, The Arcade Fire, … And You Will Know Custom by the Trail off Dead, The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, The Walkmen, Spoon, Weezer, M83, Liz Phair, Dinosaur Jr., Louis XIV, The Ponys, Fair Redhead, Ok Go, Digable Planets, The Dandy Warhols, Brian Jonestown Massacres.

Three new days of festivities were planned for August 4th, 5th and 6th 2006, in Chicago once again. One of the persistent rumors wants that Smashing Pumpkins, a group of Chicago which was dissolves in 2000, carries out a return for the occasion. In addition this year 130 groups will occur out of 8 scenes: of which refomés for the occasion of Rage Against The Machine, Queens Off The Stone Old, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Manu Chao, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, the Dresden Frauds, Eels, Nada Surfing,…
