Lolicon ( lolīta conpurekkusu , ロリータ ・ コンプレックス), or Rorikon (ロリコン) is the term Gairaigo (Japanese Mot of foreign origin) taking again the contraction of Lolita Complex (of the novel of Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita ), indicating sexual attraction for the young teenagers not yet completely trained (lolitas) even the young girls. By extension, it indicates also the mangas and animates pedopornographic.

Definition

“Lolita Complex” has as an abbreviation “lolicon rather” than “ lolicom ” because of the pronunciation of Japanese. Other foreign words with syllables finishing in “ m ” are transcribed same manner. The retranscription of the word in Rōmaji is written “ rorikon ”.

In its original Japanese direction, “lolicon” is not directly related to the artistic productions. “Loli” characterizes any representation of young girls or young girls, as well photographic (“Loli photobooks”) that drawn or filmed. “Lolicon” can also in Japanese return to the people attracted by the real young girls and pre-teenagers like fictional and is in this direction synonymous with paedophile.

Lolicon indicates more especially elsewhere than in Japan of the artistic productions (Manga S, Anime S, video games, etc) erotic or pornographic putting in scene old people of female sex from 7 to 13 years.

Two combined factors can explain the notable prevalence of the youthful aspects marked in Japanese erotic art. Initially the phenomenon “Kawaii”, known in Occident as “all that is small is nice”, and extremely popular in Japan: one sees the mark in the whole of the style manga/animates of it. Then, culture of the respect directly attached to the age, which regards the signs of ripe age as synonym of wisdom to be venerated: when an old character - preferably a Sensei - has a tempting or ribald behavior, it is quasi-systématiquement in a humorous and caricatural context shifted of “old man salace” (Brilliant Tortue in Dragon Ball , Maître Ernestin in Ranma 1/2 , etc).

Forms of representation

The lolicon generally finds its expression in contents reserved to the adults, but not only, one character can be qualified of lolicon as of the moment that it represents a character of female sex youthful and located in a sentimental context. One can quote certain famous series as Love Hina where the characters of Shinobu and Kaolla are lolicons. The Fan service is very often the factor returning a character lolicon, subtlety being often sufficiently fine to mark the amateurs of lolicon without to shock the remainder of the public. It is not rare to find one or more lolicons in the majority of the sentimental Shōnen S.

But it is in its form of erotic and pornographic expression that the lolicon is most outstanding. The very first one animates Hentai produced in Japan was a lolicon, but today, the production of animates hentai lolicon is quasi-null. Its principal forms of commercial exploitations to date are the mangas, the video plays, as well as the loli-photobooks and DVD.

Mangas

The mangas for adults remain the shape of expressions preferred of the authors of lolicon and certain editors specialized in this type of publication. Before publishing a manga, the authors very often pass by publications bringing together several authors, Comic LO (Lolita Organization) is one of most famous which appears every month with the Akaneshinsha editions.

Video games

The video games lolicon are copied on what is done in the hentai in general. The most widespread type are the plays of seduction of the character in order to have a sexual relation with him. They are appeared as a linear history in which the weather is necessary to be time with others of the choices, there is very little animation in this type of play, the characters appear in still images on decorations, the dialogs being written progressively. Some of these plays is very famous and was adapted in series animate general public, it is the case for example for Popotan .

There exist other types of plays scénarisés and more based on the action, where the characters are in 3D and very neat animation.

Loli photobooks and DVD

The loli photobooks are a form of commercial exploitation of the lolicon to be put in margin because contrary to works of the spirit, they imply minor truths. Their contents are not pornographic and their publication is legal in Japan. These books of photographs generally emphasize a covered young girl of a uniform, in bathing suit or underclothing in suggestive positions.

Legislative aspects

Those are legal in Japan as long as they do not imply model truths in the creative process. ; whereas in the majority of the other countries they are prohibited (see below). Indeed, the lolicon is frequently brought back to the Pédophilie. Its defenders protest that a fictional material does not assign the children, and that lolicons them can help to relieve the sexual tension of the paedophiles; its opponents say that on the contrary the vision of such a material encourages them to regard the children as sex objects, and that its authorization would be likely to standardize the nonfictional pedopornography. However these charges are not founded, and in Japan, country where is produced and consumed the great majority of let us lolicons, it is not proven that has as a consequence a recrudescence of the aggressions towards the young girls and the pre-teenagers (of which the frequency is over there makes of them quite lower than the majority other countries). Let us lolicons are a frequent subject of academic work on sexuality in Japan, and it is often suggested that they exist for the same reasons as the women equipped in uniform with schoolgirl are considered attracting. In Japan, the mangas let us lolicons are available to the flaky preparation and the purchase almost freely in the majority of the bookstores and the kiosks, the only restriction being which they owe, like all the publications for adults, being placed at a precise place of the store.

The statistics show a strong correlation between the great vogue of pornographic material to Japan since the years 1970 and one significant drops of the sexual assaults, in particular of children and the cases of not-impulsive rape. This supports the theory affirming that the great availability of material sexually explicit decreases in fact the rate of sexual crimes.

Countries which prohibit the lolicon clearly

The Supreme court of the United States of America decided into 2002 that “Child Pornography Prevention Act” of 1996, which prohibited the virtual pedopornography was anticonstitutional because it prohibited “productions which cause neither crimes nor victims. The virtual pedopornography is not “intrinsically related” to the sexual abuse of the children.” PROTECT Act of 2003 ( Amber Alert Law ), promulgated by George W. Bush the April 30th 2003, criminalise virtual pedopornography. In December 2005, Dwight Whorley was condemned on this subject (but it had also nonvirtual photographic pedopornography). The Supreme court did not come to a conclusion yet about this law.

South Africa specified in September 2003 (“Films and Publications Amendment Bill”) that in pedopornography virtuality was not a factor of distinction with the pedopornography in general.

In the same way, article 163.1 of the criminal code Canadian interdict “any photographic representation, filmed, video or different, carried out or not by average mechanics or electronic”. American was condemned to 30 days of prison to have made pass from Lolicon of the United States to Canada in April 2006.

A hesitant legislation

In France, all “representation of a minor when this image or this representation presents a pornographic character” is prohibited with the production like, since March 2002, with the simple detention. Nevertheless, no judgment for detention of this type of drawing only seems to be pronounced until now. The article of law employs the expression “the image of a minor ”, which maintains a certain blur: according to interpretations, one can consider that prohibition applies only to the image of an existing minor person in particular (for example a drawing made according to real model) or to the image of a minor in general, including a work of imagination. In 2006, jurisprudence not being fixed yet in a clear way, the qualification of the infringement depends on the interpretation of the judge. In the climate of sharp emotion with respect to the Pedophilia perdurant in France since the Business Dutroux ten years before, one can expect on average rather broad interpretations.

In 1994 in the United Kingdom, Criminal Justice and Public Order Act introduced a legal definition of a “indecent pseudo-photography of a child”, prohibited just like the true ones. However the law does not include the artistic productions where the reproductions do not tend to a perfect mimesis, as in the mangas.
In the Netherlands, on October 1st, 2002, a law characterizing the “virtual pedopornography” as illegal was introduced. However the law relates to only the “representation realistic of a minor in positions sexually explicit”, which lets plane ambiguity on the statute of the lolicon.
In Germany, any pornography is prohibited when it relates to “the sexual abuse of children, that it real or is presented in a realistic way”. Even ambiguity.
