It was the “Vareia” of the Romans, quoted by former geographers like one of the halts in Via which, of Italy joined the Galicia, in Spain. The city preserves many ruins.

Logroño, was populated into 905 by Sancho Abarca, king of Navarre, to guarantee the passage on Ebre and the access to the grounds taken again to the Moslems following the Bataille of Clavijo.
A new population settles then on its left bank. In 1044, in the rúa vieja, principal artery, a palate of the kings de Navarre.
rises In 1095, king de Castille, Alphonse VI, which seized Rioja, consolidates his conquest by granting to Logroño a fuero (charter) guaranteeing freedom of movement on the bridge. It is assured economic prosperity.
In XIIIe century, the city, which counts many hospitals, surrounds itself by fortifications. Its castle will be demolished at the XVIIe century.

Culture and inheritance

The Pilgrimage of Compostelle

On the Camino frances of the Pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle.
One comes from Viana, the next commune is Navarrete.

The crossed bridge, the pilgrim crosses Logroño by the paving stones of the antique rúa Vieja between old houses full with character, to which a restoration campaign returned their youth. One of the first, a large house of the XVIIIe century located at number 32, was transformed by the municipality into refuge of the pilgrim.

Religious heritage

In the middle of the city, three sanctuaries launch towards the sky their visible turns by far:
  • the cathedral baroque Santa Maria Redonda.
In the middle of the old working, it undoubtedly owes its name so that it replaced an old temple round (or polygonal) similar to those of Eunate and of Torres LED Rio. Built at XVe and XVIIIe centuries, it was high with the row of Concathédrale in 1959, at the same time as those of Calahorra and Santo Domingo of Calzada.
Most significant of outside east its principal frontage in the form of vault, flanked by two high towers baroques of the 18th century, called “mow gemelas” (binoculars), one cannot any more ornées.
At interior, it has the works allotted to Miguel Angel and Gregorio Fernández, inter alia.
  • the church Santa Maria del Palacio.

The name of palacio comes can be owing to the fact that the king Alphonse VII would have made two centuries earlier gift of a palate to allow his construction.
Started in a Romance style, the vaults are Gothic. Primitive church, there remains a span and the tower of crossed transept.
The 45 height meters pyramidal Gothic arrow, dates from XIVe century. It is so acute that it is called “the aguja” (the needle). It is curiously posed on a Ciborium, turn-lantern. It constitutes the challenge most monumental and representative of the Gothic in Rioja.
The church shelters a Romance polychrome stone virgin, of Burgundian invoice, as well as a retable of Arnaud of Brussels, dated XVIe century.
  • the church San Bartolomé.

The gate goes back to the end of XIIIe and beginning of XIVe century. It constitutes more the good example of monumental sculpture of Rioja. The iconography gathers scenes of the life of the saint, inspired by the gilded Légende. It corresponds to the late novel of transition.
Inside, the bedside is decorated with a style specific to the churches with the Santiago Way.
On the apse, the tower, rebuilt in XVIe century rises in style mudéjar brick with enamels; it had to belong to the enclosing wall of the city, of this fact it presents a certain strengthened character.
  • the church of Santiago el Real.
All impregnated history jacquaire, the rùa Vieja leads to the church of Santiago el Real, on the frontage of which, in an enormous niche, Santiago el Matamoros in high relief is registered. This work baroque of Juan de Roan (1662), a little awkward but cordial, represents holy Jacques vêtu as a pilgrim with cape, but holding up right hand a bent saber and overlapping one fringant destrier who presses with the legs the heads of the Sarrasin S vaincus.
Inside the church Santiago el Real, Gothic of XVIe century, with only one and great nave, one will find on the principal retable a Saint-Jacob, but this peaceful time, as a pilgrim.

Civil inheritance

  • the bridge.

It is the key of the development of the city. No doubt its seven current arches in semicircular arch, its cylindrical piles, go back only to 1884. But it replaced a truly Romance bridge which would have been built in XIIe century by San Juan de Ortega, the saint builder. Probably its bridge which, according to a description of the XVIIIe century, had twelve arches and three turns of defense, replaced it itself a first work of XIe century.
  • Rua Vieja.

It is one of the oldest streets of Logroño. The shells of the squares of the ground indicate to us that we are on the Santiago way. In the past, it was a very active street as testify some the still visible blazons on the frontages.
  • the Door of Revellín.

It is the only visible remainder of the fortifications which protected the city. There were other doors now disappeared: that of the Bridge, San Blas, Herventia, San Francisco and that of San Gregorio.
  • Fuente de Peregrinos.

On the place being next to the church, the fountain of the pilgrims is, to which one goes down by steps, under a armorié pediment. The place itself is paved of a giant mosaic appearing a Jeu of the goose, juego of the oca, square. It may be that the drawn obstacles are inspired by stages of the way.

Industry

It is the center of the manufacture of the wine AOC of Rioja, the exploitation of wood, metal, and of many manufactures of textile of the area.

Sport

Logroño is the stronghold of a team of Football, the Logroñés club.
