Lodelinsart

Lodelinsart (in Walloon Å Så , on the spot In Sârt ) is a section of the Belgian city of Charleroi located in Walloon region in the Province of Hainaut.

It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Sart comes from the Walloon essart (= cleared ground).

With its origin, the 1st inhabitants of what will become the commune of Lodelinsart met in order to choose to them Bourgmestre (= " Master of the bourg" or equivalent of the Mayor in France). Not managing to choose which suited between-them to become them " chef" , they then decided to organize a race in pre between the various candidates. Taken of panic, a young person via (calf in local patois) packed. It was finally him which arrived in 1st on other side of pre and gained at the same time the race. The first burgomaster of Lodelinsart was thus thus a calf. However, nonsatisfied with the result, the inhabitants of the incipient commune decided to eat calf to be avenged. A tradition was established as from this moment and since, the calf's head (with the tortoise) is the traditional and typical dish of Lodelinsart. Thus, by mocking remark, one calls the inhabitants of Lodelinsart of the " Vias of the sart". The last " Master of the bourg" Genot of 1974 to 1976 Juste was pol. before the fusion of the communes.

Lodelinsart cuts out in 3 districts, of is in west: the Largeone, the Center, and Lodelinsart-West. In Wallon fayt means beech. Indeed, until the XVIIième century Lodelinsart remains a particularly green village and, with aillor, the district of Large-Fayt was still covered with an abundant forest of beeches of which some were particularly large thus testifying to their seniority. A document going back to 1374 shows that the lord of these lieus had there the wood of Fayau (→ Fayt). There was also a planted zone of Charms, charniats in patois, which gave its name to the street of the same name.

Thereafter, the small village known an important industrial development at the 19th century by creation and the many development verries in an environment of coal mining almost all located in the common neighbors (Lodelinsart had one of them: Dechassis). Thus this commune was called, at one time, the " Small Paris" because of its economic expension. Unfortunately, of this ostentation time, there remains only some houses of completely remarkable Masters, old properties of the glass Masters. It still remains, however, the coffee and theater " the Verrière" Hive; - ex Glass Union (the old room built by the powerful glass trade union about the years 1880) as well as a last verrie still in activity and property of Glaverbel. It is located behind the school of Garenne and the room of Spîroudôme, with the street of Chênois. From this beautiful industrial time, There also remained a day of festivities saturdays which follow the Shrove Tuesday (carnival). Climbias, 13 middle-class gentlemen (formerly members of the trade union of the glassmakers) organize 2 balls traditional with the Glass Hive: the first in the afternoon, for the children; the second, masked, as from 9 p.m. for the " grands" (with a contest of transvestites). The funds collected at the time of this festive day go to selected caritative works carefully by Climbias. Between the 2 balls, those will taste the calf's head to the tortoise in their president and are accompanied by their brass band. Of return to the room, they carry out a farandole endiablée on the place Edmon Gilles, in front of the Hive.
