According to Iliade , Locriens were ordered by Ajax wire of Oïlée during the Trojan War. The Catalog of the vessels (II, 527-535) mentions as follows:

“Locriens obey the son of Oïlée, Ajax the Rapid (...). They are people of Cyne and Oponte, and Calliare, - those basic, of Scarphe and pleasant Augées, - of Tarphe and Thronie on Boagrios. It has under its orders forty black naves, sending of Locriens, whose country deals with holy Eubée. ”

Locride opontienne

The area extended from the borders of the Thessalie and the master key of the Thermopyles to the gulf of Eubée. The population divided between Locriens épicnémidiens, living with the foot of the Mont Cnémis, and Locriens opontiens, of the city of Oponte. The country was fertile and rich.

Western Locride

The area lay between the Golfe of Corinth, the Phocide, the Doride and the Étolie. It was mountainous and not very fertile. It was called Locride ozolienne or ozole (“puante”), because of his Marais which spread a repugnant odor. The most important cities were Amphissa and Naupacte.
