In Theory of probability, one calls elementary event or possibility a subset of the universe made up of only one element (in other words, a Singleton).

For all ω of Ω, the elementary event {ω} is carried out if and only if the ω result is obtained.

Let us suppose that the tribe contains all the elementary events; then it contains all the parts has finished or countable of Ω, and each one of these parts will be able to be written in the form:

The meeting being disjoined, this relation will make it possible to determine the probability of has starting from the probabilities of the elementary events.

For any discrete universe (finished or countable), a probability thus is entirely determined by the values which it takes in the elementary events.

If the universe is finished and if the assumption of equiprobability of the elementary events is applicable, one can write for any event has ,
