Live distribution

A distribution Live is a achievable Operating system since a removable support.

Origin

The concept appears only with the rise of the support Live CD which standardizes the rupture of the software with respect to the computer material.

The word live in is originating, and is addressed to the end user to mean on line usable , i.e. without passing by long and sometimes perilous phase of installation.

It is thus more one distinction of mode of use, because there is generally no clear technical limit to dissociate the systems on removable support of the others. That did not do it besides with the Disquette S Boot for example or the systems Linux Slackware which was addressed to the initiates rather more.

Types

One in general distinguishes these distribution according to the support used, although the same live distribution is often compatible with several of them (as Damn Small Linux)
  • the most common type is thus the Live CD.

It generally lodges a system allowing all the uses current of a personal computer or office, and it is intended either to be installed, or with being used such as it is. It is declined in live live DVD or minis CD for the format mini-CD

  • the current trend is with the development of live distribution on Mémoire flash, i.e. key usb or memory cards.

  • the standard support external Hard drive exists too. Very near in theory to the traditional installation, it still remains can developed because of the many constraints technique related to logics of starting of the personal computers.

  • There always exists of many distributions holding on one or two Disquette S.
