Liutprand de Crémone
Liutprand de Crémone is born towards 920 - 922 with Pavia, in a noble family lombarde living at the court of the king Hugues of Provence and making benefit this last from its knowledge of the Greek language. Thus, in 927 and 942, Hugues had sent a Casement bolt in embassy to Constantinople.
Liutprand lives initially at the court of king Hugues. It then passes to the service of the former Prime Minister Bérenger II when this one reverses Hugues in 945. Under the orders of Berenger, Liutprand is then sent in embassy in Constantinople near Constantin VII in 949. On its return, it is scrambled with Bérenger II, and towards 955 to join the court of Otton I {{er}} leaves it, which after having conquered part of the Italy (Rome and Ravenne) appoints it bishop of Pavia in 961. He takes part in the Concile of Rome two years later, in 963.
In 968, Liutprand goes back in embassy to Constantinople to ask for the Emperor Nicéphore II Phocas the hand of a princess Porphyrogénète for the son of Otton Ier, Otton II. It returns bredouille in front of Otton Ier, which hoped well to obtain by this marriage peace with the Byzantine empire, the recognition by the Byzantine emperor (Liutprand reports to us that one calls Otton “Rex” and not “Basileus” at the Byzantine court) of the title of “Emperor and Auguste” that the pope conferred to him, as well as the grounds conquered on the Byzantine field.
Perhaps Liutprand carries out a third embassy in 971, always in Constantinople, which would have finally made it possible Otton II to marry the Byzantine princess Théophano Skleraina.
He dies towards 972.
Writings
Liutprand is known for its writings:-
the Antapodosis , written between 956 and 958 at the request of Recemundus (Evèque of Elvire and ambassador of the Caliphate of Cordoue, met by Liutprand at the court of Otton Ier). On bottom of hostility of Liutprand to Berenger and his Willa wife, this work recalls the history of the Empire in six books, energy of 886 with 952.
