Little Italy

Little Italy , Small Italy , is a district of the island of Manhattan to New York, known formerly for its strong population of immigrants Italy NS.

History

The district was before delimited by the streets Elizabeth, Mott and Mulberry in the north of Canal Street, and extended even beyond. In the middle of the 20th century, the Italian community started to disperse towards other districts or suburbs, and Little Italy narrows. Towards the south, certain parts were absorbed by the extension of Chinatown, when Asian immigration became extensive. The northern zone, close to Houston Street, also lost its Italian characteristics, to become now NoLiTa, a district without particular style, whose name is an abbreviation of No rth off Li ttle I your ly. Nowadays, the section of Mulberry Street between Broome Street and Canal Street are most characteristic of Little Italy, one finds there an alignment of popular Italian restaurants filled tourists.

Attractions

The festival of San Gennaro, of the name of Patron saint of Naples, is a great festival of street organized each year with Little Italy, along Mulberry Street . The festivities last 11 days, one finds there parades, processions, various attractions of which a contest of eaters of pastes.
