Literatura Mondo , is in French a World of Literature , was between two world wars the most important literary review in Esperanto. Published in Hungary, it appeared with intermittencies between 1922 and 1949.

History

The review appears for the first time at Budapest in 1922 under the direction of Teodoro Schwartz (October 1922 - September 1924) while making call to the feathers of Kálmán Kalocsay and Julio Baghy. The Hungarian institute for Esperanto takes over then publication, in particular the doctor V. Toth, until April 1926.

The review is started again in January 1931 by V. Bleier which assumes publication and administration of Literatura Mondo. The chiefs of the drafting are again Kalocsay and Baghy, to which unite K. BODÓ like person in charge of the drafting, Ferenc Szilagyi and L. Totsche. Baghy will leave the review in January 1933 for personal reasons and of principle. Literatura Mondo was rented for its very international character with collaborators even in Eastern Asia. Its precise observations, its critics objective and detailed and its national translations in language (Estonian, Polish, Czech, Yugoslav, Swedish) were very appreciated. Literatura Mondo involves also the birth of a new generation of poets in Esperanto. For the first period of its existence, 838 pages were thus published, 830 in the second, with the format 30 X 23 and abundantly illustrated. The linguistic assessment of these fourteen years of literary use of Esperanto was balanced in 1933 and 1934 in two books, Bibliografia Gazeto and Lingvo Libro . On the whole, the review had a priceless importance in the history of the Littérature in Esperanto.

Activity of publication

Literatura Mondo was for its second period the most active house of publication of works in Esperanto. It was fixed like drank to support the publication of the first works of new authors, in order to develop original creation in Esperanto, while preserving at the same time a significant share of literary translations. During the four years of its existence, it put on the market 43 works of sizes different for a total from 7  600 pages. In 1933, it founds the Association of friendly esperantists of the books . Among the works published by Literatura Mondo are reproduced all works of Kalocsay, original works of Engholm, the first original books of Totsche, Weinhengst, Aisberg, Hendrik Adamson, the first book in Esperanto on the history of art and the Enciklopedio of Esperanto. The program for the year 1935 envisaged 15 works cumulating with 5  000 pages. The works published by Literaturo Mondo were characterized by their impeccable appearance, their contents of high-quality and an irreproachable style. Some criticisms however reproached them a taste pronounced for the neologisms.

The writers of the Enciklopedio of Esperanto rétorquent that, except in works of Baghy, Kalocsay and Totsche, one pains to find some author who uses of neologisms.
