Listen
On a sailing , a listening is a rope being used to regulate the Angle veil compared to the longitudinal axis of the sailing ship and consequently the angle of incidence of the wind on the sail. It has there a listening dedicated to each hoisted veil (Grand-voile, Génois, Spinnaker…).
Listening is fixed at the point of listening of the veil which it is intended to regulate. To modify the angle of the veil, the crew borders (i.e. car) or shocks (slackness gives) the free end of corresponding listening what respectively brings or draws aside the sail closer to the axis of the boat.
On a modern sailing ship, the free end of the listening of the veils of before generally passed on a Winch which makes it possible to gear down the traction exerted by the crew while the listening of mainsail is regulated using a Palan; listening walks on through a sliding Chariot of listening on a rail which makes it possible to carry out a final tuning of the veil.
The listening belongs to the current Manœuvres .
The term is resulting from the maritime traditional vocabulary, it indicated, at the origin, the arm " under the vent" who allowed to act since the bridge of the sailing ship on the corner lower of the veil suspended than his yard. The side symmetrically opposite was a Amure. With each tacking, the ropes thus changaient of name.
