Johannes Sigfrid Edström (November 21st, 1870 - March 18th, 1964) was the fourth president of the International Olympic committee (CIO) between 1946 and 1952.
Native of the Swedish village of Morlanda, Edström is an athlete able to run the 100 meters in 11 seconds. After its academic works with Gothenburg, in Swiss then with the the United States, it becomes industrial and sporting leader.
He founds the International federation of athletics in 1912, and until in 1946 is the president. It is carried to the presidency of the CIO in 1946 following the death of the president Henri de Baillet-Latour in 1942 after having ensured, in the capacity as vice-president of the CIO and since Sweden, neutral country, the connection between the various components of the CIO. He is elected by acclamation at the time of the congress of 1946. It is him which solves the delicate problem of the exclusion of the delegations of Germany and Japan, claimed by several nations.
He shows diplomatic virtues into full Cold war to decide the the USSR to join the Olympic movement at the time of the Olympic Games of summer of 1952 with Helsinki. In the same way, the Japan and of the Germany are again invited to the Plays. Edström can déclarer  then;: “ The Olympic Games proved, once again, that they were an instrument of peace and happiness for the world. That it is always ainsi. ” It withdraws on this triumph the August 3rd 1952, with the title of honorary president.
