Biography
Childhood
All starts in an easy family of Paysan S Juif S Lithuania immigrant NS and Polish in Rhodesia, Braudo. The mother of Johnny Clegg, Muriel Braudo, which follows courses to the university of Johannesburg, Marie with a not-Jew, Denis Clegg, against the opinion of his/her father. The couple leaves then in England to educate their newborn, small Jonathan Clegg.
But six months after this birth, the couple divorces and, after a short passage in Israel, the mother turns over to raise only her child in the family farm with Gwelo, close to Selukwe, in Rhodesia. White child in the South Africa of the Apartheid, Jonathan grows in an environment isolated from any African culture. In spite of that, it is able to bind friendship with the son of the driver of the family which initiates it with the Ndebele, a language which draws its origins from the Zoulou.
At six years, his/her mother, who is singer in the night clubs, leaves in round in the country and sends it in an English pension reserved to the White to the very strict discipline of which it has a very bad memory.
One year later, his/her mother marries a South-African journalist, daN Pienaar, and the family leaves food in an apartment in full center Johannesburg during two years. Writer and poet resulting from a very poor white medium working, hard high in a former family afrikaner, this one has a strong influence in the education of Jonathan (which will know his/her biological father only at 21 years) while making him share its passion for Africa.
The family leaves then two years in Zambia where the father-in-law of Jonathan found a place in a newspaper of Lusaka and from there will cover the war with the Congo. During this time, the emergent Independence of Africa helping, Jonathan Clegg enters a multiracial school for the first time. Returned in Johannesburg, his/her father-in-law learns how to him to survive in full nature while taking it along every weekend to make wild camp-site in the bush. But at the beginning of adolescence, his/her father-in-law flees of the day at the following day in Australia with another woman, carrying the half-sister of Jonathan which had just been three years old.
At thirteen years, feeling completely foreign with the religion and the Jewish community which he considers too passive vis-a-vis Apartheid, he refuses to make his Bar-mitsva. Not supporting more either the school, it running away three weeks in Zulu territory with two friends at fourteen years before being found by the police force. Of return to Johannesburg, it starts to trail a little in the streets but without enthusiasm.
Beginnings
Jonathan, that everyone starts to call Johnny, initiates with guitar with fifteen years, which enables him to meet a Zulu musician of street which appeared close to at his place, Mntonganazo Mzila . In spite of the stopping of the language, it follows two years during which Clegg learns the rudiments from the music Zulu and the Ihhlangwini, accompanying Mzila in all “hostels”, centers of immigrant workers, in spite of the prohibition of the Blacks and the White to enter the sectors which theirs were not reserved. That makes it possible despite everything Clegg to be made a reputation of good musician and to really include/understand the ditch which apartheid dug.
At the same time, Sipho Mchunu had left its ground native Zulu to exert the trade of gardener in the town of Durban. Being cut a reputation of good guitarist, and being attracted by the hope of higher wages, it decided to go up towards the big city, where it intended to speak for the first time about a famous white boy to the talent about Zulu musician.
It was that the district of Johnny was also that where Sipho worked. What was to arrive arrived and came the meeting held on the two musicians. First of all stimulated by their desire for comparing their talents of guitarist, the two accomplices joined to form a duet out of the commun run, which was going to have an international success. Sipho made it possible Johnny to perfect its techniques of guitar, dance, language and combat to the Zulu stick. Johnny made it possible Sipho to be up to all the tricks Celte and the Rock.
Together, they secretly made the round of all the immigrant workers' home, enjoignant the other musicians with compétitionner with them. Into full Apartheid, this unimaginable association caused a strong agitation, as well artistic as political, divided between those which disparaged this multi-culturality and those which encouraged it.
The Juluka period
Thus, in 1976, Johnny and Sipho obtain their first true contract, under the name Johnny and Sipho , and follows the exit of their first album Woza Friday (As Friday) which will astound the entire country. It is there that starts the concept of Johnny Clegg to join together English words and Western melodies with the music Zulu. Into 1979, the duet changes name to always become Juluka whose first album, in spite of an ovation on behalf of criticisms, is censured in South Africa, under the cut of the Apartheid. Their second album, African Litany , was their first large national success, with in particular their first hit Impi . Lastly, the fourth album marks their opening on the world scene. 5 discs of Juluka become gold discs and 2, discs platinums.
In 1985, the adventure Juluka finishes with the departure of Sipho, turned over to bring of the assistance to its community. Johnny forms thus its second group Savuka. Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu will never lose contact and will decide thereafter to remake a round and a new album together.
The Savuka period
The first album of Savuka, Third World Child (“Child of the Third world”, titrates which announces its engagement) was a very large success, with more than two million sold specimens and the title-headlights " Asimbonanga " (song dedicated to Nelson Mandela, then Captive on an island off the Cape) and " Scatterlings off Africa " (which was included in the Original soundtrack of Rain Man , which attests of its international success as of this time). The following, Shadow Man made it possible Clegg to undertake a world tour, dividing the scene inter alia with Steve Winwood with the E. - U. and George Michael with the Canada. The fourth album Heat, Dust and Dreams was nominated in the category Best World Music and gained the Bilboard Music Award for the best album of the world in 1993.
During all these years, Johnny Clegg forever ceased making rounds in South Africa. In 1994, it leaves there to make the promotion of its Best Of In My African Dream . In 1997, Johnny and Sipho meet to work a new album of Juluka, after a deactivation 10 years. What will lead to the exit of the album Ya Vuka Inkunzi (The Bull has Risen) or Crocodile Coils.
To note that the singer Renaud dedicated to him the song Jonathan in his album Putain of truck , in 1988. It should produce its next album.
